Exceptional drought arrives suddenly along the South Platte corridor

Denver County's drought conditions took a sharp turn in the first week of August. For most of the past twelve weeks the county held steady at 100% cumulative coverage across the Abnormally Dry through Extreme Drought categories, an already severe baseline that had at least stopped worsening. Then, in the week of August 4 through 10, the Exceptional Drought category, the worst classification the U.S. Drought Monitor tracks, jumped from 0% to 36.4% coverage. Because these categories are cumulative, that means more than a third of the county, including the stretch of the South Platte River corridor running through this ecosystem, is now sitting in the single most severe drought tier on record, layered on top of conditions that were already extreme. This matters for a river system already under seasonal stress, and it matters more given what sits along that same corridor. The Suncor Energy (USA) Inc. Commerce City refinery discharges to this stretch of the South Platte under its own permit, and if this sudden drought escalation has already reduced available flow, that would narrow the margin for diluting anything the plant releases, right as the river can least afford it. Current streamflow data for this stretch wasn't available to confirm whether flow has in fact dropped yet. Late summer already brings naturally lower flows and warmer water, both of which cut into dissolved oxygen just when aquatic insects are emerging and fish and invertebrates need it most. A jump this sudden and this deep, rather than a gradual slide, deserves close attention in the weeks ahead, both for what the drought itself does to the river and for how much less room it could leave to absorb whatever the refinery is putting into it.

The USGS gauge at Laramie measured just 2.32 cubic feet per second on August 11, with a gage height of 3.12 feet, a thin trickle for a river that basin wildlife and irrigated pasture both lean on heavily this time of year. The low flow was recorded in the same window the county tipped into majority-D3 coverage, consistent with the broader drought pattern even though the gauge data alone can't establish a direct cause. It also tracks with a broader western pattern this year of record-low spring snowpack water content, and forecasters are calling for continued dryness through October. The timing matters ecologically. The basin only just came off a season of nesting Swainson's Hawks and blooming milkweed drawing in native bees, and a river running this low heading into fall is the kind of stress that rarely shows up all at once. A Comet Darner was seen along the water's edge on July 14, a dragonfly whose nymphs spend months submerged in the water column and are notoriously intolerant of poor water quality. Golden Northern Bumble Bees have also been reported along the Brooklyn waterfront through late July, though their presence reflects shoreline flowering habitat rather than anything about water chemistry offshore. None of this means the two facts cancel each other out. A shared estuary system, fed by the Passaic, Hackensack, and Hudson watersheds before reaching the East River and Brooklyn waterfront corridor, is large and hydrologically complex enough to carry a major permit holder in sustained non-compliance in one arm while still supporting water-quality-sensitive insects somewhere else along its edge. A compliance listing by itself says nothing about dissolved oxygen or contaminant levels at a specific downstream point like the Brooklyn shoreline; that would require dedicated water-quality sampling, not just a permit status. VIIRS aboard the Suomi NPP satellite logged a high-confidence reading on August 11th at 27.5 megawatts of radiative power, and a NOAA-20 pass the day before caught a smaller, lower-confidence signal about 3 kilometers away. Two separate satellites picking up heat at nearly the same spot on consecutive days is a stronger indicator of a sustained ground fire than any single pass would be, though no news coverage in Portuguese or English has confirmed an actual wildfire at that site and date. The source could just as easily be an agricultural burn or another heat source unrelated to fire. It's worth flagging anyway, landing as it does in a summer of intensifying fire weather across the region. The cork oak and holm oak woodlands that make up this ecosystem evolved under a dry-summer fire regime, and cork oak in particular carries a genuine adaptation to it: bark thick enough to insulate living tissue through a low-intensity burn, a trait long exploited by traditional cork harvesting as well as by the tree's own fire ecology. But that resilience has limits. Repeated or unusually intense fire seasons, layered onto a warming and drying Mediterranean climate, can push past what these forests are built to absorb. Nothing in these detections confirms fire on the ground here. What they do confirm is that both the conditions and the signals warrant continued watching.

The has been turning up steadily around Ecatepec de Morelos for nearly two years now, and not as a single stray sighting. Community records span four separate neighborhoods, Tulpetlac, San Cristóbal Centro, Chulavista, and nearby areas, spaced two to seven kilometers apart, with observations running from August 2024 through this past May fairly evenly across the seasons. That pattern, spread across multiple sites and sustained over time rather than clustered around one event, points to an established population rather than a one-time hitchhiker riding in on nursery stock or a shipping pallet. This species built its reputation in the southern United States after arriving from South America, and it earns that reputation honestly. It forages aggressively, delivers a painful sting, and tends to displace native ants and other ground-dwelling arthropods wherever it settles in numbers. In grassland and xeric shrub country like the Interior Plains and Piedmonts with Grasslands and Xeric Shrub that surrounds this part of the Central Mexican matorral, that displacement matters beyond the ants themselves. Ground-nesting birds and reptiles rely on the same soil layer fire ants colonize, and a shift in the invertebrate base those animals feed on can ripple upward through the food web. The records so far are presence observations, not colony counts, so the true scale of the infestation is not yet known. But the geographic spread and the two-year persistence are enough to flag this population for a closer, targeted survey rather than filing it away as background noise.

Nineteen research-grade records came back from this stretch of the European Atlantic mixed forests ecoregion, running from late February through the first week of August and clustered across Watermael-Boitsfort, Auderghem, Woluwe and Groenendael on the Hoeilaart side of the forest. Two of them are identified all the way to Vespa velutina nigrithorax, the subspecies behind the European invasion. Every record is flagged introduced. That matters more here than it might elsewhere, in a forest that carries legal protection precisely because of the species that depend on it. This hornet is a different kind of concern from the seasonal sightings that usually fill a summer field note. It is not native to Europe, and the pattern here — repeat sightings at the same handful of sites, spanning most of a season rather than a single week — is what distinguishes a spreading population from a stray individual. It hunts. Workers station themselves outside honeybee hives and native bee nests, snatching foragers returning heavy with pollen, sometimes hovering at the entrance long enough over a season to strip a colony of its workforce. Native wasps and bees, which evolved without this predator in the picture, have no particular defense against it. A protected forest is exactly the kind of place where sustained predation pressure on pollinators carries the highest stakes. This is a presence record, not a population count. Observation counts reflect observer effort, not abundance. What the records do establish is that the hornet is here and persisting across the season, not just passing through, which is the threshold that usually triggers nest-search and removal efforts in affected regions. The roads and trails around Sámara and along the Ruta del Sol have turned orange and black this week with an unusually large pulse of (Hartnollius quadratus), a native land crab of this stretch of the Nicoya coast. Community sightings jumped from a handful a month for most of the year to roughly eighty in the first five days of August alone. The same week last year produced a single record. The records themselves sketch the shape of it. Reports come both from the coast — Sámara, Playa Ostional, Puerto Carrillo — and from inland stretches of Ruta del Sol through Nicoya and Hojancha, and they pile up almost entirely within a few days at the start of the month, in the middle of the wet season. One observer note filed with these records describes the species as a burrower of tropical forest, mangrove and humid coastal ground, which fits a crab that spends most of its life out of sight and then, briefly, is impossible to miss. In the first week of August 2025, the entire watershed here was rated abnormally dry or worse, with nearly all of it deep in severe drought. This same week in 2026, none of the county sits in moderate, severe, extreme, or exceptional drought, and only about a third remains even at the mildest abnormally dry tier. That share has held steady for seven weeks running after climbing through June, which reads less like a temporary reprieve than a settled recovery. On the Wilson, Trask, and Nestucca Rivers, gauges are reading at the low end of their past 90-day range for both water level and flow, with water temperatures around 20°C. Taken alone, that looks like stress. But for a county no longer under drought designation, this is simply the ordinary late-summer ebb these coastal rivers go through every year, as the pulse of snowmelt and spring rain fades into the dry months before autumn storms return. The recovery doesn't erase the older water quality picture, though. The Trask and Wilson are still listed as impaired under the Clean Water Act, a designation that predates this year's rainfall and hasn't shifted with it. Compliance among the county's permitted dischargers, mostly dairy operations, remains low-level: a handful of facilities carry recent violations and modest penalties, none serious enough to be flagged for significant non-compliance. The drought is easing considerably across this stretch of the Coast Range, but the questions about what's still moving through these rivers haven't gone anywhere.

Two Grinnell treatment plants flag unresolved violations upstream of impaired waters

Most of the named surface waters around the Rolling Loess Prairies are already living under a pollution diet. EPA's 2024 impairment listings show seven of the seventeen water bodies assessed within ten miles of this landscape are officially impaired under the Clean Water Act: Walnut Creek and an unnamed tributary, two segments of Little Bear Creek, Arbor Lake, and Rock Creek Lake, all five already carrying a completed TMDL, a mandated cleanup plan capping how much pollution the waterbody can absorb and still meet standards. The North Skunk River is also listed as impaired, for a non-pollutant cause. That backdrop matters because two municipal wastewater treatment plants sit right at the center of this landscape: the City of Grinnell and the Grinnell City STP. Both hold active discharge permits, and EPA's compliance record shows one currently has an unresolved permit violation, the other a violation logged within the past four quarters. Neither plant appears on EPA's significant non-compliance list, and no penalties have been assessed, zero dollars total, so the violations remain minor by regulatory standards, with no detail on which pollutant or concentration surfacing at this level of reporting. This isn't evidence that the two plants caused the downstream impairments; the TMDLs in place address other pollution sources too, and they predate this compliance record. What links the three plant and fish records is a shared preference for warm, slow-moving, nutrient-rich water, the kind of conditions that develop in backwaters and sluggish side channels during the warmer months. None of this amounts to a trend, at least not yet. Widening the observation window from this week out to the past 90 days did not turn up any repeat detections or spread to new sites; each record stands alone, isolated in time and place. No water-chemistry or streamflow data was available this season either, so there is no way to confirm whether the river is actually running warmer, slower, or more nutrient-loaded right now, conditions that would make these species' presence more meaningful. One-off sightings without a supporting trend or chemistry data don't add up to an emerging invasion or a water-quality signal, and it would be premature to read one into them. Still, this is a useful baseline. If Water Lettuce, primrose-willow, or mosquitofish turn up again later in the season, especially at repeat sites, this week's scattered records will be the point of comparison that shows whether something is actually building.

Ammonia discharges climb for a year at two Strongsville plants

Two wastewater treatment plants operated by the City of Strongsville have been discharging ammonia into the East Branch Rocky River system at levels that have worsened every quarter for a full year, and the trend line is unambiguous. Plant C exceeded its ammonia limit by 79 percent in the quarter ending last September, then 131 percent, then 256 percent, and now 351 percent as of this July. Plant B shows the same climb on a slightly offset schedule: 74 percent over in December, 195 percent in March, 326 percent by July. This is not a single slip or a one-off exceedance; it is a documented, four-quarter escalation at both facilities simultaneously. Both plants discharge into a stream system already under stress. Baldwin Creek and the headwaters of the East Branch Rocky River are listed among the state's impaired waters, meaning they have already failed to meet basic water quality standards and are awaiting a formal cleanup plan. Ammonia loading onto a stream in that condition is a problem on two fronts: at elevated concentrations it is directly toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates, and as it nitrifies, the breakdown process consumes dissolved oxygen that those same organisms depend on. The nearby stream gauges on the East Branch and on Baldwin Creek carry no ammonia or oxygen sensors, so there is no direct in-stream reading of how this loading is manifesting once it reaches the water. That data gap matters more than usual here, given that the violations are landing during the low-flow stretch of summer, when a stream has the least volume available to dilute an ammonia load and the least buffer against oxygen depletion. A four-quarter escalating trend, on an already-impaired segment, arriving at the time of year when the river can least absorb it, is a combination worth watching closely in the seasons ahead.

Westwego's treatment plant misses permit limits for a third straight quarter

The City of Westwego's wastewater treatment plant, which discharges near Bayou Segnette on the west bank, has now exceeded its Clean Water Act permit limits four separate times across three straight quarters. Organic loading ran 80% and then 78% over the legal limit in the last two reporting periods, while solids came in at 107% over limit in the spring quarter and 65% over in the most recent quarter on record, which closed just a week before this survey. That pattern matters more than a single sharp spike would. A one-time exceedance can usually be traced to a storm event or an equipment failure, but four violations spread across nine months point to a treatment process that is consistently struggling to keep pace with the load coming through it. This plant is one of eight facilities in the watershed currently out of compliance with their discharge permits, out of 42 Clean Water Act-permitted operations tied to these waters, and five of those eight are in significant non-compliance. Twenty of the 27 local water bodies EPA has assessed are already listed as impaired and awaiting cleanup plans, among them Bayou Bienvenue, Bayou Chaperon, Bashman Bayou, Bayou Dupre, and Bayou St. John. No monitoring gauge tracks oxygen or organic loading downstream of Westwego's outfall, so no data confirms a direct line from this plant's exceedances to the condition of any one bayou; that link remains plausible rather than proven. But excess organic loading and solids are exactly the kind of pollution that drives down dissolved oxygen in slow-moving, warm coastal water, and late summer, when temperatures are highest and oxygen is scarcest to begin with, is when that stress falls hardest on the fish and invertebrates that depend on it to breathe.

The impairment designation itself hasn't been lifted as of the latest cycle. Separately, one facility within this same corridor has a name attached to the accountability record: Cloister Del Mar Condominium, listed in EPA's significant non-compliance registry for its Clean Water Act permit. No parameter-level violation details are available to say what was exceeded or by how much, and there's no evidence tying its discharge to the impairment findings above — but its presence on the ledger is a reminder that water quality accountability isn't only a diffuse regional condition; it includes specific, identifiable permit holders along the shoreline people walk past every day. It's worth sitting with this alongside the nesting sea turtles and the gopher tortoises moving through the scrub nearby this season. Those animals draw the eye, but the canal and lagoon system bordering their habitat is under an official, unresolved pollution cleanup mandate that predates any of this summer's sightings.
