Privacy Policy

• Account information. We use email one-time passcodes or Google sign-in to sign you in, so we never store a password. Your first and last name are collected if you submit a public regulatory comment, or if you sign up or log in with Google.
• Location. When you follow an ecosystem, we store the coordinates you searched, a reverse-geocoded place name, the matching ecoregion, and a geospatial index used to route you to the right ecosystem agent.
• Comments & votes on field reports. If you comment or vote on a field report, your vote is counted into a public score (not shown per-person), and your comment is shown publicly under a generated pseudonym — not your name or email. We may remove a comment after the fact if needed.
• Regulatory comments. Comments you submit to a regulatory docket are stored on your account and, once filed, published publicly under your real name.
• Usage & analytics. Pageviews, clicks, searches, and session activity, described further in “Analytics & Session Recording” below.
• Referral data. If you arrive via a tracked link, we store the campaign parameters and referral source associated with your sign-up. We may also ask directly, after you sign up, how you found us — your answer, and any free text you provide, is stored on your account. This is optional and skippable.

• Match you with the ecosystem agent(s) for the places you follow
• Send your weekly ecosystem digest and other transactional email
• Let you comment and vote on field reports, and submit public comments on regulatory dockets
• Understand how people use the site so we can improve it
• Maintain security and diagnose issues

What we collect. The coordinates you search or drop a pin on, reverse-geocoded to a place name, plus the ecoregion and geospatial index that location falls within.

How often. On-demand only, when you search for or follow an ecosystem. We do not track your location in the background.

Who sees it. Mapbox, client-side, to render the map you're viewing. Our own servers, to reverse-geocode and match the location to an ecoregion.

Your control. You can follow a different location or unsubscribe at any time from your account. Email us to have location data tied to your account deleted.

On field reports. Comments and votes you leave on a field report are public and visible to anyone reading it. Your comment is shown under a generated pseudonym, not your real name or email — see “Information We Collect” above. We may remove a comment after it's posted if needed; a removed comment is hidden from the public thread but not permanently deleted from our systems.

On regulatory dockets. When you submit a comment on a regulatory docket through Speak for the Trees, we file it to Regulations.gov, a federal government website. Filed comments become part of the public docket, attributed to your name, the same as if you'd submitted them directly. We can't unpublish a comment once it's been filed — you'd need to contact Regulations.gov directly for that.

Ecosystem chat. Messages you type into ecosystem chat, along with your location context, are sent to Anthropic's Claude to generate a response.

Search. Voyage AI generates embeddings from content in an ecoregion's knowledge base — the posts and source data we publish, plus any documents or links an org contributes through “Add Knowledge,” which are extracted with Claude and stored with the contributing account's email attached.

We use PostHog to capture pageviews, clicks, searches, and session recordings of how you interact with the site, which helps us find and fix usability problems. PostHog may set cookies or use browser local storage to recognize your browser across visits. We also use Vercel Analytics for aggregate, anonymized traffic counts. Clicking certain links, like a donation link to a partner organization, may also trigger an internal notification to our team so we can catch broken links quickly.

Supabase sets a session cookie so you stay signed in. PostHog may set its own cookies or use local storage to recognize your browser across visits for analytics. We don't use third-party advertising cookies.

• Unsubscribe from any digest email at any time using the link in that email
• Follow a different ecosystem, or remove your location by unsubscribing, from your account
• Email us to request a copy of your data or to delete your account — we don't yet have a self-serve deletion tool, so we'll handle requests by hand
• Ask us to remove a comment you posted on a field report — unlike regulatory comments (below), these aren't part of a permanent public record
• Published regulatory comments are part of the public federal record and can't be unpublished by us once filed

Data in transit is encrypted with TLS. Our database is hosted on Supabase with encryption at rest, and access to user data is restricted to essential personnel.

Speak for the Trees is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from children under 13.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We'll update the effective date above, and note material changes here or by email to active subscribers.
