A single urban pond keeps drawing Snail Kites back, month after month

A small wetland tucked into the San Antonio Kaua II neighborhood of Mérida, known locally as Acuaparque, has quietly become reliable habitat for . Over the past year, birders have logged the species there nearly every month, from August 2025 through a sighting just three days ago, and nearly all of those records cluster at this one constructed or semi-natural water feature rather than scattering across the wider region. The kite is a specialist in the truest sense of the word. Its bill is thin, sharply hooked, and curved almost like a can opener, and that shape exists for a single task: reaching into the shell of an apple snail and lifting the animal free without breaking it apart. Snail Kites eat almost nothing else, which makes an individual bird a living instrument for reading the marsh beneath it. A kite has no reason to linger anywhere the snails aren't, so repeated sightings at one small pond are really a report on that pond's water chemistry, its vegetation, and its snail population, month after month. Finding that signal at one modest urban water feature, surrounded by streets and rooftops rather than open wetland, says something about how much ecological value a small, well-maintained patch of marsh habitat can carry when the water level and prey base hold steady. That surface calm is worth sitting with, because it says almost nothing about what federal water quality assessments actually show for this stretch of the Rouge River watershed. Within ten miles of here, 25 of 48 assessed water bodies carry an official impairment listing, among them Newburgh Lake, Ford Lake, Belleville Lake, Geddes Pond, Phoenix Lake, and Wilcox Lake, along with more than a dozen connected river and stream segments. Most of these carry a completed or required pollution-reduction plan, a TMDL or total maximum daily load, as of the 2024 assessment cycle. Coverage of Severe Drought or worse had held nearly flat, just under 81 percent, for five straight weeks through early August. In the latest reading it jumped to almost 98 percent, a sharp intensification rather than a continuation of that plateau. That shift matters a great deal for this stretch of channel, including the Bricktown Canal reach, which has been in a documented hypoxia episode since mid-July. Dissolved oxygen there had fallen to 2.8 mg/L in 26°C water, a level close to where fish kills start to accelerate. Low flow, reduced aeration, and warm shallow water are the three main drivers of that kind of oxygen stress, and drought deepens all three at once. Fresh dissolved oxygen readings for the stretch were not available this week, so it isn't possible to say directly whether conditions have held steady, eased, or tipped further. But the scale of the drought escalation raises the odds that whatever oxygen stress was already present is being sustained or worsened rather than relieved. Striped Meadowhawks return to the Bow River corridor on cue

A (Sympetrum pallipes) turned up again in Varsity on August 5, the latest in a string of sightings that have traced the Bow River corridor through Cochrane, southeast Calgary, and Foothills County over the past year. What's notable isn't any single sighting but the pattern: these records cluster almost every year in the same narrow window, late August into September, which is exactly when this species should be most visible. Meadowhawks spend most of their lives out of sight. The nymphs develop underwater in ponds and slow, silty backwaters, sometimes for a full year, feeding on smaller invertebrates before crawling out onto emergent vegetation to split their larval skin and emerge as adults. Once airborne, Striped Meadowhawks are creatures of open banks and wetland margins, low fliers that perch conspicuously on bare twigs and rocks warmed by the sun, darting out to snatch small flying insects and returning to the same perch again and again. Their reddish-orange bodies and pale, unmarked legs (the trait behind the common name) make them one of the easier meadowhawks to pick out from the rest of the genus, a group that also includes the region's and s. That this species keeps showing up here matters more than the individual count. iNaturalist flags Sympetrum pallipes as a species of conservation concern, so a presence record repeated year after year, in the same season, along the same stretch of river, is meaningfully different from a one-off sighting. These are still just presence records, not a census, so nothing here shows whether the local population is growing or shrinking, only that the corridor keeps supporting a full life cycle for the species season after season. That continuity lines up with what a broader 30-day survey of the same stretch turned up: a mixed assemblage of odonates including and various darners in the genus , alongside riparian fish like and . That combination, damselflies and dragonflies needing clean still water to complete metamorphosis, fish needing cool moving water and intact banks, is the signature of a riparian system that is still doing the job wetlands and slow-water edges are supposed to do.

Streamflow on the North Branch Clinton River near Mt. This isn't a drought story. Oakland County has held at zero percent drought coverage across every category for the past twelve weeks, so something other than regional weather is pulling this reach down. The timing is what makes this worth watching closely. What's harder to say is how the streams are responding, because there is very little instrumentation to say it with. One USGS site is returning current data anywhere in this area, TURKEY BRANCH NEAR ROCKVILLE, MD, and it is a stage-only gage. Water level is the single parameter it reports: 4.28 feet, most recently at 14:30 UTC on August 6. It carries no streamflow sensor, no water temperature sensor, no pH, and no dissolved oxygen. We queried each of those parameters separately across the surrounding area and every one came back empty. Nothing in the record here says conditions are normal, and nothing says they are degraded. A single water-level number, with no historical context attached to it, cannot support either call. That gap matters. Sustained dry stretches typically show up in streams with a lag, as reduced groundwater recharge lowers baseflow and shallower water heats up faster under August sun, and the aquatic insects and coldwater-dependent species in these tributaries are exactly what that pattern hits first. Those are the things a temperature or dissolved-oxygen sensor would catch, and right now nothing nearby is watching for them. Groups like the Little Falls Watershed Alliance and Muddy Branch Alliance, who walk these creeks directly, are likely to notice a change before any instrument does. Against that backdrop of tightening water availability and thin monitoring coverage, the compliance status of the Woodley Gardens Swim Club is worth keeping an eye on. An invasive brown alga is recorded north of Iberia

A new arrival is worth noting along this stretch of coast near the Nivelle estuary. , a brown alga native to East Asia, has turned up here in both citizen-science observations and research-grade records. The species first appeared in the Strait of Gibraltar around 2015 and has been recorded progressively further north along the Atlantic coast since. Its presence here, north of its earlier Iberian range, is consistent with range expansion rather than a one-off drift record. Where it establishes, the alga forms dense subtidal mats. Those mats overgrow native kelp and seagrass, compete with local algae, and change the physical structure that invertebrates and fish use for shelter and food. In parts of southern Spain, kelp cover declined substantially within a few years of its arrival. Nothing on that scale has been documented this far north, and no local monitoring group could be identified currently tracking it at this site. Early occurrences are, however, the stage at which removal efforts have the best odds, so the record is worth following.

Cook County's soil moisture whiplash, and a compliance flag on the river

Cook County's soil moisture has been on a wild ride this growing season. In mid-May the county showed no dryness at all. Within two weeks it had flipped to abnormally dry conditions countywide, and by early June nearly 70 percent of the county sat in moderate drought. Then, just as fast, conditions cleared completely by mid-July. Now, in the first days of August, mild dryness is creeping back in. That's a full dry-drought-clear-dry cycle in about twelve weeks, a lot of hydrological whiplash for one summer. Shallow-rooted plants, lawns, turf, and many street trees draw water from the top foot or so of soil, so they feel every one of these swings almost immediately, going stressed and green again in quick succession. Deep-taprooted prairie natives don't have that problem the same way. Compass plant, covered here in July after its bloom appeared at sites across the city, sends a root down as far as 15 feet, well below where these surface fluctuations reach. That difference in root architecture is a big part of why prairie natives tend to hold steady through a summer like this one while turf grass and ornamental plantings show the strain. Water stress on the landscape isn't only a matter of rainfall and root depth, though. Along the river, River City Facilities is currently listed by EPA as being in significant non-compliance with its discharge permit. A query for the specific pollutants, exceedance levels, and dates behind that listing turned up no further detail, so it's not yet clear what the violation involves or whether it has affected water quality in the river. Potomac filtration plant's discharge violations ease from a two-year peak

Suspended solids and aluminum are the byproducts of the coagulation and filtration process itself; at the concentrations recorded in March, they can cloud water, clog fish gills, and settle over the streambed habitat that macroinvertebrates depend on, which is precisely what downstream monitoring at the plant's own outfall would be needed to confirm or rule out. Whether the next quarter continues the decline or this proves a temporary dip in an otherwise long-running pattern is worth watching closely.

Skunk Creek runs dry after ten weeks of severe drought

Skunk Creek, near its confluence with the Agua Fria and Salt rivers, is running essentially dry. The USGS gauge there is reading close to zero cubic feet per second, with gage height under a foot and only one or two readings logged for the entire past week, a sign that flow has dropped so low it sits near the edge of what the instrument can reliably register. This did not happen overnight. Maricopa County spent ten straight weeks, from mid-May into late July, with 97 percent or more of the county locked in severe drought or worse. The past week is the first real crack in that stretch, with coverage easing to around 80 percent, still severe, but a meaningful drop in a single week. Skunk Creek's dry bed is what that ten-week siege looks like on the ground: an ephemeral desert wash that depends entirely on seasonal flow has simply run out of water to carry. It is worth being clear about what this is not. None of the nearby water bodies, including Skunk Creek, Cave Creek, the Arizona Canal, and Cortez Park Lake, are listed as impaired, and permitted dischargers upstream show no significant compliance failures. No lions in the record, but that says nothing about the lions

A two-year sweep of community-science observations for this stretch of the Khathiar-Gir dry deciduous forests, running through August 2026, turned up zero logged sightings of the Asiatic Lion. That is a striking gap given that this landscape is the species' namesake habitat and, globally, the last place it survives outside captivity. What the record shows instead is dominated by garden and ornamental plants: hibiscus cultivars, jasmines, croton, bougainvillea relatives, the kind of roadside and dooryard flora that draws a phone camera far more readily than anything moving through the underbrush. The absence says essentially nothing about how the lions are actually doing. They persist in concentrated, tightly managed core zones where public access is restricted, so a casual recorder walking the forest edge or a village road has almost no chance of encountering one, unlike the ornamental shrubs and flowering trees planted right along the paths people actually use. The mismatch is the real lesson here: this kind of observation log is shaped far more by where people are permitted to walk than by what the forest actually holds. A landscape's defining species can be functionally invisible in casual records while still holding its ground in the sections nobody without a permit ever enters. Closing that gap would mean weighting data collection toward rangers, field researchers, and authorized survey work inside the protected core, rather than reading the composition of edge-of-range, public submissions as a proxy for what the forest contains.

Ammonia spikes near Athens hit a watershed with no slack left

The Ron Campbell Apartments wastewater discharger near Athens has blown past its legal ammonia limit twice in the past year: 1,097% over permit at the end of December 2025, then 390% over again at the end of March 2026. That puts the facility in significant non-compliance with its Clean Water Act permit, one of only two dischargers in the watershed currently flagged that way, alongside JBH Investments LLC. Ammonia at those concentrations is directly toxic to fish and invertebrates, and it also fuels bacterial growth that strips dissolved oxygen from the water as it breaks down, the same low-oxygen stress that bites hardest during warm, slow-moving late-summer flow. That timing matters here because the surrounding watershed has little capacity to absorb it: of 23 assessed waterways within ten miles, all 23 are already listed as impaired, and 20 of them, including both Hocking River segments near Athens, require a formal cleanup plan before conditions can improve. Whether that ammonia reached the that emerged from the river a few weeks ago, alongside the , , and mayflies that share these waters, is not something anyone can currently confirm. The Hocking River at Athens OH gage tracks streamflow and gage height only; it records nothing about dissolved oxygen, pH, or nutrient levels. So while the ammonia violations are documented in black and white, how far downstream that pollution traveled, or how long it lingered in the Western Allegheny Plateau's streams, is simply not being measured.

An estuary impairment with an actual cleanup plan behind it

This estuary is one of five water bodies within ten miles of the Oxnard Plain and Valleys currently listed as impaired under the Clean Water Act. But an impairment listing is not the whole story here: this estuary already has an EPA-approved TMDL, a cleanup framework with quantified pollutant limits that is actively guiding restoration work. That distinction matters ecologically, because this stretch of coastal wetland and estuarine habitat is a brackish transition zone where steelhead smolt out toward the ocean and shorebirds stage along the Pacific Flyway. An impairment with a funded, quantified plan behind it is a meaningfully different situation than one left to drift with no plan at all. The broader picture around the plain is more textured than a simple impaired-versus-clean split. Flow across the Triassic Basins watershed, from Goose Creek to Third Fork Creek to the Eno River, had been crawling along at a fraction of a cubic foot per second for most of the past ninety days. The most recent reading hit 14.7 cubic feet per second, the highest of the entire record, arriving in exactly the week the drought maps broke. That pattern, a flat and starved baseline followed by a sudden spike, is the signature of a sharp storm ending a long dry spell, not a water table recovering gradually from below. What that first flush carries downstream is worth watching closely. Third Fork Creek, Ellerbe Creek, and Little Lick Creek, all now running with this new pulse of water, are already listed as impaired under the Clean Water Act. Months of low, warm, oxygen-poor flow tend to let fine sediment and adsorbed pollutants settle quietly into the streambed; a first-flush surge like this one is exactly the kind of event that can scour that material back into suspension, dropping oxygen and clouding the water even without any new source of contamination. The drought monitor and the creek gauges are telling two different stories in the Triassic Basins watershed right now, and the gap between them is the real story. The surrounding county spent five straight weeks under Exceptional Drought, the most severe category the U.S. Drought Monitor recognizes, with the designation covering nearly the entire county through early July. Then conditions broke fast: coverage fell to 34% by mid-July, to zero by July 21, and this week only about 18% of the county sits in Severe Drought or worse. The small Piedmont creeks that feed this system haven't caught up to that recovery. Gauges on Third Fork Creek, Sandy Creek, Goose Creek, Ellerbe Creek, and the Eno River all spiked with the rain and are already receding back toward drought-era lows; the July 31 reading came in near the bottom of the past month's range, with gage height still below its 30-day average. That's the ordinary signature of headwater streams in this region. Rain moves through fast rather than soaking into the ground and recharging base flow, so the drought monitor can clear out on paper while the creeks themselves stay stressed underneath. For the cool, well-oxygenated riffle habitat that sensitive aquatic species depend on, a quick rebound in the official drought category doesn't mean the water has actually returned to where it needs to be. Whether these flows stabilize or slide again as summer heat keeps pulling moisture back out of the system is worth watching closely over the coming weeks.

Drought map clears while local creeks sit at record lows

Davidson County's drought classification cleared completely this week, zero percent of the county in any drought category as of late July into early August. That's a remarkable reversal: the same map showed the entire county in severe drought, with more than ninety percent in extreme drought, just three months earlier in late April. On paper, the drought is over. The creeks tell a different story. Gauges across the Cumberland watershed, including Richland Creek at Charlotte Avenue, Browns Creek at the Fairgrounds, and Whites Creek near Bordeaux, are running at or near the bottom of their 90 day range rather than the top. Discharge has swung roughly a thousandfold over that window, from a peak above 6,000 cubic feet per second down to about 5 cubic feet per second today, with gage heights dropping from over 20 feet to under 3. Drought classification is built on rainfall and soil moisture measured over a rolling period, so it can clear well before stream levels catch up; small urban tributaries lag furthest behind, since they depend on sustained baseflow that takes weeks to rebuild even after rain returns. That lag matters right now, in the middle of summer breeding season for fish and aquatic insects. Low flow concentrates whatever nutrients, runoff, or warmth is already in the water, and it shrinks the pools and riffles that fish and macroinvertebrates typically rely on for oxygen and cover. A clean bill on the drought map is real, but across the Outer Nashville Basin's small streams, it isn't the same thing as water back in the creek.

Two recurring thermal hotspots near the coast, likely industrial, not fire

Satellite fire-detection passes over the last five days have flagged two thermal hotspots along the coast, one in eastern Chiba and another farther south toward Sagami Bay. Neither looks like cause for alarm. Both showed up on separate overpasses a day or two apart at nearly the same coordinates, and that kind of recurrence, a hotspot reappearing in the same place rather than spreading or drifting, is the classic signature of a stationary heat source: a factory, a flare stack, some fixed industrial process, rather than a wildfire working its way through vegetation. The heat signal itself was weak across all 22 detections logged in the wider area, well below the intensity typical of an actual fire front. That weakness, combined with the point-source recurrence, is what points away from fire in the first place. None of this pins down what is actually producing the heat. Thermal satellite data alone cannot distinguish an industrial process from a controlled burn from something else entirely, and no local agency reporting was available this cycle to close that gap. It is also worth flagging, for anyone hoping to cross-check conditions on the ground here in the Taiheiyo evergreen forests, that the usual water-quality and regulatory monitoring networks are built around US systems and simply don't extend coverage to this part of the Pacific coast. So there is nothing to report on that front this week, neither good nor bad, just a genuine gap in coverage rather than a clean bill of health. The honest read is that these two hotspots look like routine industrial heat rather than active fire, but that conclusion rests on the pattern of detection, not on any confirmed identification of the source.

Cape Cod's sudden lurch into severe drought, with no local gauge to track it

Drought arrived on Cape Cod this summer with a speed that the county-level numbers only hint at. As of early June, no part of Barnstable County registered severe drought. By mid-June that had flipped completely: the entire county sat at severe drought (D2 or worse) for five straight weeks, from June 16 through July 20. It has since eased, though just under half the county remains in that category as of the most recent reading. The swing looks even sharper set against last year. Over the same late-July stretch in 2025, moderate drought covered most of the county, but severe drought never appeared at all, week after week reading zero. This summer crossed a threshold the Cape didn't come near in 2025; it isn't simply a drier version of a normal season, it's a different category of dry. What that means on the ground is harder to pin down than the county statistic suggests. The outer Cape is tidal and lacks the network of freshwater stream gauges that would show how this drought is landing on the kettle ponds, cranberry bogs, and the Herring River system, so there's no direct local measurement of the effect on those freshwater systems yet. Many of the Cape's ponds are already prone to summer algal blooms in warm, still water, and a season with this much added dryness stress is worth watching closely even absent a gauge to confirm it. The drought's reach is also worth weighing against what else is under pressure on the ground here. Wastewater infrastructure on the Cape sits atop the same sandy, fast-draining soils that make the Atlantic Coastal Pine Barrens vulnerable to both drought and groundwater contamination alike. Separately, a 2022-cycle EPA assessment found most nearby water bodies, including the Herring River, already impaired. That is a static baseline rather than a change tied to this year's drought, but it is a reminder of how little slack these systems already have. A summer this dry, layered onto a landscape with limited freshwater monitoring, is worth tracking closely as conditions continue to shift.

McGrath Lake stays impaired while its monitoring gauges go dark

McGrath Lake sits tucked behind the dunes near the mouth of the Santa Clara River, and it has been carrying an old designation that's easy to forget about: it remains on California's official Clean Water Act impaired waters list, one of five local water bodies still awaiting or undergoing pollution cleanup. That's the case even as every nearby ocean beach, from Oxnard Beach to Hollywood Beach and fifteen others, fully meets water quality standards under the EPA's most recent assessment. McGrath Lake and the Santa Clara River Estuary already have a cleanup plan in place; Channel Islands Harbor and Ventura Keys, also impaired, are still waiting on one. What stands out this week isn't the impairment itself, which is old news by now, but a permitted aquatic pesticide and weed control discharge site that sits essentially on top of the lake's coordinates. There is no facility-specific violation data linking that permit to the lake's current condition, so this is a proximity worth watching rather than a confirmed cause. Aquatic herbicide programs are a common, often necessary tool against invasive weeds in shallow coastal lakes, but they carry real tradeoffs for oxygen levels and aquatic life when dosing runs high or timing overlaps with sensitive periods. What makes this harder to watch closely is that the USGS gauges within about six miles of the lake and the estuary have returned no readings for the past 30 days, and none for that same window in July and August of last year either. So a lake already flagged as impaired, sitting beside a permitted chemical discharge point, currently has no public streamflow or water-quality data confirming what is actually happening in it right now. That gap in the record is worth someone checking on the ground, not just tracking on paper.

Eight ash records near Brighton, and what they don't tell us

The one thread with any substance in the chalk and beech woodland near Brighton and Lewes concerns . Eight sightings were logged across the past three months, running from May 4 through a research-grade record near Brighton on July 27; three are research-grade and the rest still need ID. These are individual presence records — not a population count, and not a trend. Nothing in this data shows local decline or recovery, and the count reflects how many people were out looking as much as anything else. Ash isn't quite alone on the threatened list this cycle: a single Adonis Blue also turned up in the same window. One butterfly sighting carries even less weight than eight tree records, but it's worth noting rather than rounding away. The threatened designation itself reflects something much larger than a handful of Brighton trees: ash dieback, caused by the fungus Hymenoscyphus fraxineus, has been reshaping British woodlands for well over a decade since its arrival from East Asia. Ash is a genuine structural component of this mixed woodland alongside the that defines it, so the species' fate matters here in principle. This cycle's sightings simply don't carry that story one way or the other. Everything else logged in the same window — 200 sightings across 128 taxa — was ordinary summer fare with no conservation flags attached. led the count at 13 records, with Meadow Brown at 11 and at six. Fourteen introduced species appeared, all in ones and twos and mostly garden escapes. It was, in short, a quiet cycle on the species front, and worth recording as exactly that rather than inflating it into more than it was.
