Four separate birders have logged within a mile of each other near South State Road on Ann Arbor's south side over the past two days. For this stretch of the Clayey High Lime Till Plains, that is about as unlikely as a bird sighting gets. The Swallow-tailed Kite is built for a very different landscape than this one: southeastern river swamps and bottomland forest, where it courses low and buoyant over the canopy on a tail split deep into two long streamers, snatching dragonflies, cicadas, and small lizards straight out of the air with its feet, sometimes eating them on the wing without ever landing. It nests in the Gulf Coast and Deep South, in the tall trees fringing cypress sloughs and coastal plain rivers, and it has no established breeding population anywhere near the Great Lakes. Seeing one here is a bit like spotting a coastal seabird on an inland reservoir; the bird is simply not supposed to be within hundreds of miles of this place. A two-year look back at records within roughly 30 miles of the site turns up nothing comparable, which rules out this being some overlooked local pattern. What makes it credible rather than a string of misidentifications is the clustering: four independent observers, the same square mile, the same 48-hour window. That pattern points toward a genuine vagrancy event, quite possibly a post-breeding adult or juvenile that overshot its normal range as kites disperse northward once the nesting season winds down. Whether this bird is passing through or settles in for a while is not something a single sighting can answer. That question is exactly what continued watching from the ground, over the coming days, will settle.

In a heavily managed, dammed system like this one, summer flow answers to reservoir operations and diversions as much as to rainfall, and it doesn't track the county drought map in any simple way.

There is no measured downstream effect tied to this exceedance yet. What the record does show plainly is a facility that has missed its own permitted limit three reporting periods running, on a stretch of river the Sewickley Valley Conservation Association works downstream of Ambridge. A pattern this consistent is worth watching closely as future quarterly reports come in.

None of these on its own proves a single unfolding story, but a fast drought onset following last year's script would add stress to systems in the Green Mountain Foothills that are already showing early or unusual signals this season. Water stress of this kind rarely stays confined to soil moisture readings alone; it compounds with whatever else is already straining a watershed. That's part of the context for a separate, unrelated compliance issue in the watershed: the FAIRFAX facility is currently listed in significant non-compliance, but the record on file shows this is an administrative failure — a missing discharge monitoring report — not a documented pollutant exceedance. There's no evidence of a chemical discharge tied to this status, and nothing here suggests the drought and Fairfax's paperwork lapse are connected. Not in the last month, not in the last six, not even across two years within the forest's own boundaries. Only when the search radius stretches out to roughly 100 kilometers does anything appear, and what surfaces then, some 200 sightings, is overwhelmingly moths logged around Pune, Mumbai, Thane, Matheran, Dapoli, and Raigarh. Those are cities and hill stations, not this forest. None of what might be happening here right now, breeding activity, insect emergence, water conditions in the valley's streams, can actually be checked. No water-quality gauge, no compliance record, no conservation group's monitoring appears to reach this particular stretch of forest. It would be a mistake to read the silence as ecological quiet. It's closer to the opposite: a dry deciduous forest in this part of the Deccan has never drawn the kind of casual observation effort that a city full of smartphones and porch lights generates almost as a byproduct. Species like the tiger moths, tussock moths, and underwing moths turning up in the Mumbai and Pune records, groups well represented locally in families such as the , almost certainly have counterparts moving through these hills right now. There's simply no one nearby recording them. That pattern runs backward from what monitoring should probably look like. Effort should, if anything, track the places with the least human traffic most closely, since those are the places where change goes longest unnoticed. Instead it clusters where the observers already are. Whatever is moving through this valley this month is, for now, simply going undocumented.

Across the Tucson basin and washes from Cactus Forest Drive to Madera Canyon, Box Canyon Road, and Sonoita, observers have logged 49 sightings of this heavy-bodied toad in the past 30 days, following eight months of near total absence, with only two stray records between last October and this May. A similar pattern, near-silence followed by a sharp midsummer cluster, appears in last year's iNaturalist records too, though these are community-science observations shaped by observer effort as much as by the toad's actual movements, so it's worth treating as a suggestive signal rather than a confirmed recurring trend. What is well established is the biology behind it: this is North America's largest native toad, a stocky, warty animal that can reach over seven inches long, and it spends most of the year buried underground in a state of dormancy, waiting out the dry heat. It surfaces almost entirely in response to soil saturation from monsoon rains, emerging to breed in temporary rain pools that may hold water for only a few weeks. Eggs and tadpoles have to develop fast in that narrow window; miss it, and there is no second chance until the following summer. The species is also listed as threatened on iNaturalist, which makes this brief, rain-triggered burst of activity worth watching closely while it lasts, rather than something to assume will repeat on the same schedule every year. A poor monsoon, or pools that dry too quickly, can mean a season with no successful breeding at all for a toad that already spends the other eleven months of the year out of sight.

In its most recent reporting period the facility's own numbers to its regulator show sulfide at over 1,200 times the permitted limit and hydrogen sulfide at nearly 200 times over. Arsenic came in at 34 times the legal limit, and silver, chloride, ammonia, and total suspended solids all exceeded their permits as well. This is not a one-time lapse. Arsenic has run roughly 49 to 54 times over limit in each of the two prior quarters, and chloride, ammonia, and solids violations have now recurred for at least four consecutive quarters. That pattern, more than any single reading, is what marks this as a chronic operational failure rather than a bad week at the plant. What these figures establish is that permitted limits were broken, badly and repeatedly; they do not by themselves show a fish kill or a fouled reach downstream. No streamflow or dissolved-oxygen reading near the site was available this cycle to say what these exceedances look like in the water itself once it leaves the outfall. Context is worth holding alongside the numbers, even without a direct measured link. Boulder County's drought footprint jumped from about 11 percent in extreme drought in mid-July to roughly 85 percent by early August, the kind of shift that generally leaves less water in local streams to dilute any discharge. Keep readingFive casual sightings logged between August 5 and August 12, clustered tightly around Chinnapa Garden and Jayamahal, trace to the same spot: Aquarium Paradise, the large public aquarium that opened this year on Jayamahal Main Road — same postal code (560006), same tight radius as this cluster. One , one , one , and one each of and were photographed within a few hundred meters of each other — the footprint of an aquarium built to house over 100 exotic species, including sharks and rays. None of these species are native to South Deccan streams or tanks, but none of them are loose in a waterway either: this reads like an aquarium's exhibit tanks, not five separate home aquarium owners clustered in one residential pocket, and it isn't a release. The gar is still worth knowing about even as an exhibit animal. It's a large ambush predator native to the slow-moving rivers and bayous of the southern United States and Mexico, capable of growing well past a meter and easily outliving a typical home tank. Fish like this are common casualties of the aquarium trade when kept privately — owners who can't keep up with their size sometimes release them into local waterways instead of finding them another home. That risk applies far less to a maintained public exhibit, but it's a reminder of what a fish like this can do if it ever does end up loose nearby. Bengaluru's lakes and seasonal channels are interconnected enough that a release anywhere in this area could eventually reach water bodies closer to the South Deccan Plateau dry deciduous forests reserve itself. There's no indication any of these five fish are anywhere but in the aquarium's tanks, and no water-quality or protected-land monitoring data suggesting a release has occurred. Still, it's worth watching whether similar species start turning up loose in lakes or streams nearer the reserve.

A year of near-constant dryness peaked in late June, when moderate drought covered the entire county, the same stretch when black tupelos here were already flaming into premature scarlet and beech leaves were showing the dark veinal banding of Beech Leaf Disease. Since then the numbers have reversed fast: moderate drought fell to about 22% of the county by late July, then to roughly 2%, and by the first week of August it registered zero. That's a real shift in water availability across the Triassic Lowlands, not just a lull. What it means for the trees already stressed is a separate question, though. A tupelo that dropped leaves early in June has more soil moisture to work with now, but early leaf drop isn't reversible this season; the tree simply banked less energy before going dormant. Beech Leaf Disease follows a different mechanism entirely. It's driven by a nematode feeding inside the leaf tissue, not by drought stress, so easing water conditions won't slow the banding or the leaf curling that follows. The drought spike likely made both trees more vulnerable to what came next, but its disappearance doesn't undo either process. It will be worth watching whether next year's growth shows any recovery in the tupelos, even as the beech disease keeps its own separate course.

That kind of steady, repeating record is what year-round residency looks like, as distinct from a bird just passing through on migration. This is a large, sooty-black cockatoo with pale cheek patches and a tail flashed white at the base, built around a bill shaped for one very specific job: prising seed out of tough, woody fruit. That heavy, curved lower mandible works like a can opener, levering apart the cones of banksia and hakea to get at the seed inside, a technique the bird has to learn over months as a fledgling before it becomes efficient. It is a specialist's tool, and it only pays off where the specialist's food still grows. That specialization is exactly what makes this species vulnerable, and exactly why the pattern of sightings here matters. Carnaby's cockatoos nest almost nowhere but old hollows burned or rotted into mature , cavities that take upward of a century of tree growth to form and cannot be replaced on any human timescale once cleared. Feeding depends just as narrowly on stands of banksia and hakea, the shrubs whose cones this woodland still holds enough of to draw flocks in through the winter months, when many of the region's cockatoos are shuttling between separate breeding and feeding grounds. Decades of land clearing across the southwest have steadily narrowed both resources at once, and iNaturalist records this species as threatened, part of why its sightings here carry extra weight. The sightings record here can't say whether the local population is growing or shrinking; community observations track where people happen to be looking as much as where the birds are. What it does establish is continued occupancy through a season when this species is often on the move elsewhere, which makes this stretch of woodland, with its old hollows and its banksia and hakea thickets, worth watching rather than just passing through. A flock working the canopy this week, cracking cones with that heavy bill, is a small, ordinary-looking event that is actually one of the more precarious things happening in the bush right now.

This is the largest skate in the world, a flattened, bottom-dwelling relative of sharks that can span more than two metres from wingtip to wingtip. It moves slowly over the seabed, often lying half-buried in sediment, and lays its eggs in tough leathery cases sometimes called mermaid's purses that can take well over a year to hatch. That slow life history, late maturity, few young, long incubation, is exactly what makes the species so vulnerable: it simply cannot reproduce fast enough to absorb heavy fishing pressure. Decades of trawling in the Clyde did just that, and the species profile tool lists the flapper skate as Critically Endangered. The ground it was recorded on is not incidental. The South Arran MPA grew out of the Lamlash Bay No Take Zone, established in 2008 after local divers and fishermen pushed for a patch of seabed where bottom-dwelling species like this skate could simply be left alone. The zone expanded into the wider South Arran MPA in 2014, extending that protection across more of the ground the skate depends on. Marine occurrence records show six sightings of the species in these waters over the past two years, but only one falls within the last twelve months. That is worth reading carefully: a presence record like this confirms an animal was there, not how many exist or whether the population is climbing or falling. The same skate can be logged more than once, and a thinner recent count can just as easily reflect fewer surveys as fewer skate. For scale, Locust Point Quarry is one of five facilities in significant non-compliance among 482 active discharge permit holders within ten miles, a group that also includes the Harrisburg AWTF, Silver Spring Country Estates, and Rohrer Bus Service, and one of 55 currently in some violation. Separately, 27 of 28 assessed water bodies in the region are still meeting water quality standards, a reminder that a permit violation and a measured downstream impairment are two different things. A facility can run out of compliance for a stretch before that shows up as damage anyone can measure in the water itself, especially in ground that drains this fast and this far out of sight.

Laurel Creek, in San Mateo County, carries the same designation. The verdict isn't uniform across the watershed. San Francisquito Creek and Marina Lagoon are currently meeting their designated uses, and Matadero Creek simply lacks enough monitoring data to say either way. The impairment finding is specific to these bay segments and to Laurel Creek, not a blanket statement about every waterway feeding this stretch of coast. What stands out is less the impairment itself than what sits upstream of it. Within the immediate area, 35 facilities hold active Clean Water Act discharge permits. Seven are currently in violation, eight more had violations within the past year, and yet only four of the 35 have ever been inspected. No penalties have been assessed on any of them locally. Widen the lens to the broader watershed and the picture inverts: nine facilities there carry a documented history of significant violations, with more than $7 million in penalties assessed over time, though none of them are currently in serious non-compliance. Taken together, this reads less like an active spill and more like a long-standing gap between the paperwork of permitting and the follow-through of actually checking it. No single facility here has been tied to a specific pollutant load reaching the bay, and none of this pins the impairment on any one source. But a bay already on the impaired list, with a total maximum daily load in place and little assimilative capacity left, has correspondingly little room to absorb inattention upstream. The gap between permits issued and permits inspected is exactly the kind of quiet condition that tends to go unnoticed until a wet winter or a failing outfall turns it into something more visible.
