The stream gauge on the Salt River at Priest Drive, near where the Verde River joins in below Scottsdale, read zero cubic feet per second on August 26. It's tempting to read that number as this summer's drought finally squeezing the last water out of the channel, and the numbers backing that read are real: Maricopa County is sitting at nearly 80 percent severe drought coverage, and Phoenix has been running more than five degrees above normal for daily highs. But the fuller explanation for a dry channel at this exact spot is infrastructure, not weather. This reach sits just below Granite Reef Diversion Dam, where the Salt River Project has for more than a century routed nearly all of the river's natural flow into the Arizona and South canals rather than leaving it in the bed. A USGS reconstruction of the system found this stretch running dry even in comparatively wet years back in the late 1970s. A zero reading at Priest Drive, in other words, is often the river doing exactly what it was engineered to do a hundred years ago; this year's drought and heat are simply added pressure on a channel that was already designed to run empty here most summers. A separate concern for this same stretch of the Gila/Salt Intermediate Basins is a permitted discharger rather than a diversion structure. MODERN INDUSTIES, INC holds a Clean Water Act discharge permit for this area, and its record is worth tracking precisely because the receiving channel is already this stressed. A waterway with no assured base flow has far less capacity to dilute or buffer any wastewater discharge than the same channel would in a normal year, so whatever this facility is permitted to release matters more here than it would somewhere with a reliable perennial flow underneath it.
Keep readingA (Ipomoea cairica) was confirmed at research grade along the forest edge near Puntarenas on August 17. That single record turns out to be one thread in a larger picture: over the past 30 days, eight separate introduced ornamental species have been logged around this stretch of Costa Rican seasonal moist forest, among them , , , , , , and . These are opportunistic community-science sightings over a single window, so they can't establish a trend on their own, but the number and variety of introduced ornamentals turning up together is worth noting. Mile-a-minute vine earns its common name honestly. It is a fast-growing perennial liana that climbs rather than roots deep, and that habit is exactly what makes a forest edge vulnerable: the edge is already sunlit and disturbed, thick with low shrubs and saplings for the vine to scramble up. It throws itself over that structure and shades out the leaves beneath before they can respond, and once it reaches the canopy gap light an edge provides, it holds that light for itself. Ornamental escapes do not need a storm or a flood to reach a forest edge, only a nearby garden and a bird or a drainage line to carry the seed the rest of the way. Puntarenas's settlement edges sit directly against this forest, and eight escaped ornamentals surfacing in a single month is worth watching as a possible sign of spillover from garden to forest edge, even if a single month's sightings can't confirm it.
Keep readingBoulder County's drought history this year is more of a rollercoaster than a straight slide. Severe drought (D2) has blanketed the entire county since late February. Extreme drought (D3 or worse) actually hit 100% of the county for over a month, from April 7 through May 11, then eased sharply — down to 14% through most of June and just 11% by the week of July 14 — before jumping back up. By this past week the figure had climbed to 85%, and it has held there for three straight weeks now. This is the county's second extreme-drought spike this year, not its first. The gauge record lines up with what the drought maps show. Fourmile Creek, at both Orodell and Logan Mill Road near Crisman, is running at 0.2 cubic feet per second, the low end of a 30-day range that never once climbed above that mark. For a creek of this size heading into late summer, that is barely a trickle. Upstream, the winter supply was thin too. The Niwot SNOTEL station sits at 9,940 feet, well above this ecosystem and outside the Fourmile drainage, so it is a proxy for high-country supply rather than a measure of conditions on the ground here. It banked 23.1 inches of water-year precipitation against a 28.4 inch median, 81% of normal. Snowpack and summer base flow are related in these mountains, but we don't have hydrologic data tying that specific shortfall to Fourmile Creek's specific numbers. What we have is a light snow year sitting alongside a hot, dry summer: the Boulder airport weather station has logged a mean daily high of 92.3°F over the past 30 days, six degrees above the 1991-2020 normal, hit 104°F on August 3rd, and has seen barely a fifth of an inch of rain against a normal of 1.31 inches. That is the broader pattern across the Colorado River Basin as well: thin mountain snowpack alongside an increasingly aggressive summer aridity. and have both been logged this summer along Boulder Canyon Drive and the Boulder Creek corridor, cottonwood as recently as August 23. Both are riparian trees that grow where shallow groundwater is reliable, which is why a creek at this level is worth keeping an eye on. No one has reported canopy stress in these stands, and we haven't measured any; if you walk this stretch, what the canopy looks like from here through September is the useful thing to note. The Boulder Watershed Collective works this ground and is worth following for anyone tracking what happens to Fourmile Creek and the county's other small streams as this drought holds, or deepens further.
Keep readingThe gage in this stretch of the Carolina Slate Belt watershed read 18.8 cubic feet per second on August 24, roughly 12 percent of its own 14-day average of nearly 155 cfs. Gage height tells the same story, down to 1.91 feet against an 8-reading average above 11. This isn't a gentle summer recession; it's a sharp break at the low end of anything the network has recorded over the past month. The land tells a matching story. Saluda County has slid into abnormally dry conditions after weeks of moderate drought, the nearest weather station is logging nearly an inch of rainfall deficit for the month, and daily temperatures have been running 2 to 3 degrees above normal, including a 102 degree day on August 18. Heat and low flow compound each other: warm, slow-moving water holds less dissolved oxygen just as biological demand on it rises, and a shrinking channel concentrates whatever is already dissolved in it instead of diluting it. Wastewater permits in this watershed, including the one governing the Town of Saluda's system and the SCWSA WWTP, are written against a statistic called the 7Q10, the lowest 7-day average flow expected once every ten years. That figure exists precisely because permitted discharges depend on the river supplying a certain volume of dilution. Flow this far below the recent average is exactly the kind of condition that statistic is meant to anticipate. Both facilities are in fact currently listed in Significant Non-Compliance in EPA's records, though the compliance record on hand does not specify a pollutant exceedance, so this may reflect an administrative failure such as a missed report or deadline rather than a chemical discharge — either way, a river with far less water on hand to buffer a discharge is a condition worth watching alongside that status. Separately, no frogs, toads, or salamanders have been logged in the area over the past six months, against 88 other species recorded in just the last 30 days. That's a gap worth watching rather than reading into. The , logged nearby in early July, is an explosive breeder that depends on rain filling temporary pools, so a dry stretch like this one would plausibly suppress its breeding activity. But a six-month gap this size could just as easily reflect fewer observers out looking. It's a thread to check against wetland conditions going forward, not a conclusion to draw from yet.
Keep readingSomething is walking across the roads and yards on the north side of Mérida this August, and it has eight legs, a dense coat of bristles, and a rust-colored patch on its abdomen that gives it its name. The (Tliltocatl epicureanus) appears to be turning up in greater numbers than usual, with 30 sightings logged on iNaturalist this May-through-August window compared to 10 over the same stretch in 2025. Eight of those records came in the last two weeks alone, clustered in a band running from the city's edge out toward the coast. This spider is a Yucatán Peninsula endemic, found nowhere else on Earth, which makes any shift in its visibility here worth paying attention to. Like other mygalomorph tarantulas, the males spend most of their lives in a single burrow, ambushing insects and the occasional small vertebrate that wanders too close to the entrance. They only leave that burrow behind once they mature, and when they do, it is for one purpose: to wander in search of a female's silk-lined tunnel during the rainy season. A male that has left home for good, with no burrow of his own left to retreat to, is a male with nothing to do but keep moving, which is exactly what puts him in a driveway or crossing a road in broad view of a person with a phone. That life-history detail makes mating dispersal a plausible explanation for this year's higher count, though a growing number of people logging sightings on the app over the same period could also be inflating the numbers, and the underlying counts are still small enough that some of the swing could be noise. The pattern to watch for is whether these sightings taper off as the rains ease later in the season; that decline would be consistent with the ordinary, if dramatic, business of a mature male tarantula looking for a mate, rather than anything unusual happening to the species itself.
Keep readingA year ago this week, Oklahoma County's Cross Timbers country carried almost no drought signal at all: barely 5 percent of the county rated even abnormally dry, and none of it fell into an actual drought category. Twelve months on, that picture has inverted. By early October 2025 the entire county sat in at least moderate drought, and by late spring 2026 severe drought covered all of it, with extreme drought at times blanketing the whole county through early April. There was real relief this summer. From late June into early August, severe-drought coverage eased to around 81 percent and extreme drought disappeared entirely. That reprieve didn't hold. Severe drought climbed back to nearly 98 percent of the county by the second week of August and has now returned to covering the entire county in the most recent data, though without the extreme intensity seen last spring. For the oaks, hickories, and understory of the Northern Cross Timbers, this kind of whiplash, wet enough to ease stress, then dry again within weeks, matters more than a single bad season would. These Cross-Timbers savanna-woodland trees are adapted to drought generally, with the thick bark and deep taproots that let post oak stands persist on thin, rocky soils for centuries. But repeated swings between stress and partial recovery leave less margin for root systems, and for the aquatic life in the streams threading through this landscape. Separately, the Midwest City North wastewater treatment plant was flagged for significant non-compliance under its Clean Water Act permit in this same stretch of county. EPA records show the matter as an administrative one — resolved, pending, tied to reporting or compliance-schedule requirements rather than a documented pollutant exceedance — and the facility has since returned to compliance. It's a reminder of the regulatory backdrop in a watershed already under drought stress, though not evidence of an active discharge harming water quality right now. The Watershed Sustainability Alliance and the Conservation Coalition of Oklahoma Foundation both do water-stewardship work in this region, and how they respond as drought conditions persist is worth watching.
Keep readingA permit application under review at the DEC would rebuild roughly 270 feet of shoreline at 2 Noble Street on Greenpoint's East River waterfront, between Noble and Oak Streets, and carry a public waterfront walkway along with it. Alongside reconstructing the bulkhead and riprap revetment, the project would open a stretch of tidal shoreline that has been closed off to the public. Greenpoint's waterfront has been opening up gradually, parcel by parcel, as old industrial sites are rebuilt and each one adds its own segment of public edge. This is another step in that sequence: 270 more feet of a shoreline that is slowly becoming reachable. What that offers is a chance for people to reconnect with the estuary at their doorstep. Most residents here live a block from tidal water they can only see through a fence, and there is a good deal on the other side of it. , and , , , , , , and have all been recorded around this part of the harbor in the past two months, cormorants among them on Quay and Franklin Streets, a few blocks from the site. A walkway is what turns all of that from something happening out of sight into something people can watch, learn and speak up for. The DEC is accepting comments through August 27. This is the window to shape how the space gets built: where the walkway meets the water, whether the edge invites people to stop and look at the river or just pass by it, and what habitat the new bulkhead and riprap offer below the waterline. The Newtown Creek Alliance, a watershed group based nearby at the Newtown Creek-East River confluence, works this exact stretch of shoreline and would be a natural voice on how the access is designed. Keep readingMumbai's fragmented green refuges have a persistent, uninvited resident. The has been logged 12 times in the past 30 days and 48 times over the past year within protected and semi-protected green spaces bordering the Malabar Coast moist forests, with sightings recurring at the same key sites: Aarey Milk Colony, Mahim Nature Park in Dharavi, and Malabar Hill itself. Records show up nearly every month, three to eight a month, rather than clustering in one burst, which points to an established population rather than snails that wandered in and died out. This species, native to East Africa, is one of the most widely spread invasive land snails in the world, and it earns that reputation by being a generalist that eats through native seedlings and understory plants, competes directly with smaller native mollusks for food and space, and can carry parasites, including the rat lungworm nematode, that pose a real risk to anyone handling them or eating unwashed produce from infested gardens. In a city where these three sites are already squeezed to a fraction of what once bordered the Malabar Coast forests, a slow-breeding native plant community has little room to absorb sustained grazing pressure from a snail that can lay hundreds of eggs a year and shows no sign of dying back on its own. None of this shows the population is spreading beyond these sites or getting worse year over year, since recurring sightings can also just mean more people are looking. What the record does show is that the snail is no longer a passing curiosity at Aarey, Mahim, or Malabar Hill. It's a fixture.
Keep readingThis site near Enugu, part of the Guinean forest-savanna, sits in what the record shows as essentially unwatched ground. No water-quality sensors cover this stretch, no discharge monitoring, no protected-land data. The community-science record is thinner still: widening the search to a full year and 100 kilometers turns up only a handful of species records, and at the exact coordinates there are just two, a logged this past May and a from October 2024, eighteen months apart. That gap is the entire on-site biological record available. None of this means the land is empty or quiet. Late summer here is peak breeding season, with aquatic insects emerging and the usual pressures of warm, still water building toward algal bloom risk in nutrient-loaded systems. What's missing isn't activity, it's anyone documenting it. A data desert like this doesn't tell you the ecosystem is stable or in trouble; it tells you no one's been asked, or no one's answered. Worth naming plainly, since the absence of a record too easily reads as an absence of anything happening.
Keep readingThe Village of Tivoli's wastewater treatment plant on the Hudson has now exceeded its permitted ammonia discharge limit for three consecutive quarterly reporting periods, and remains in significant non-compliance today. The violation was severe last December, when total ammonia nitrogen at the discharge point ran more than twelve times the permitted monthly average. That spike has eased considerably since, but the most recent reading, taken August 14, still came in 46% over the limit. Ammonia is toxic to fish and other aquatic life, and that toxicity worsens as water warms and as pH rises, which is exactly the direction conditions push in mid-August. This is a permit exceedance on record, not a confirmed fish kill or oxygen crash in the river itself; establishing that would take separate monitoring of the receiving water. Still, a facility recording its third straight quarter over limit, with the exceedance still running high in the same month that stresses aquatic life most, is a trend worth watching rather than a problem to consider resolved.
Keep readingLake Lakengren, tucked within the Whitewater Interlobate Area in Preble County, has its first logged records of the (Graptemys geographica): 17 observations between July 26 and July 29, several repeating on the same handful of coordinates. That pattern, tight in time and place, reads less like a lucky glimpse and more like someone who knew where to look and kept coming back. The species earns its name from the fine, contour-line etching across the carapace of juveniles and females, a map-like pattern that fades somewhat as males age. These are river turtles at heart, built with a keeled shell for cutting current and a fondness for basking logs along flowing water, though they adapt readily to calmer lake habitat like this one. Females grow substantially larger than males, sometimes reaching shell dimensions that let them crush freshwater mussels and snails whole with broad, flattened jaws built for exactly that job, while males stick to softer prey like insects. This is a first record for community-science coverage at the site, not evidence the turtle just showed up. The surrounding area already has scattered records from the past year — Acton Lake in June, a roadside sighting near Richmond in early July, Wayne County the previous August — so the animal was plainly already in the neighborhood. Map turtles are also wary, spending much of their time submerged or slipping off a log at the first hint of an approaching observer, so a species can go unnoticed at a lake for years until someone surveys at the right hour with the right approach. Whatever effort produced this cluster of sightings, it now stands as a useful baseline for tracking the population here going forward. Map turtles feed heavily on mussels and snails, animals whose own health tracks water quality closely, which makes them a species worth watching over time in a watershed where the Richmond wastewater treatment plant has an open violation record, reported here in July. Nothing in the current record ties that violation to this turtle cluster, but the two are worth tracking side by side as this baseline develops.
Keep readingThe Schmitz Ready Mix facility in Milwaukee, located roughly 15 kilometers inland from the lake plain, is now listed by EPA in significant non-compliance with its Clean Water Act discharge permit. The facility exceeded at least one monthly average pollutant limit; the compliance record doesn't specify which pollutant or by how much, only that the exceedance is on the books and the case remains open. This is a distinct matter from the combined-sewer overflow violations at the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District reported here in July. The two permit holders aren't connected findings, just separate dischargers drawing regulatory scrutiny in the same watershed within a single season, which says more about the intensity of oversight on this stretch of the Southeastern Wisconsin Till Plains watershed than about any single facility. For scale, EPA's most recent impaired-waters assessment covering Bradford Beach, Atwater Beach, Milwaukee Harbor, and dozens of other area waterbodies currently lists all of them as not impaired, though many carry data gaps for some designated uses. That assessment predates this violation and doesn't account for it, so it can't be read as evidence one way or the other about conditions near the Schmitz outfall specifically. What's on record is simple: a permitted discharger exceeded its limit, and the question of what that means downstream, and for how long, remains open.
Keep readingEast of Gunnison, nearly 28,500 acres of hay meadow and grazing land are beginning the shift into subdivisions, commercial lots, and a business park under an annexation called Gunnison Rising. Getting here took more than eight years of federal review, because part of the site overlaps designated critical habitat for the , a bird listed as threatened in 2014 and found nowhere on Earth outside the Gunnison and San Miguel basins. To build on roughly 637 acres of that habitat, the developer, Gunnison Valley Properties, had to secure a Habitat Conservation Plan and an incidental take permit under the Endangered Species Act, the legal mechanism that allows some harm to a protected species in exchange for offsetting measures elsewhere. Those offsets are now real, mapped land rather than a vague promise. A 420 acre parcel has been donated to Western Colorado University, with a 160 acre conservation easement on it held by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, and a separate 465 acre tract has been newly designated the Tomichi Creek State Wildlife Area. Together they form the tangible other half of the trade: two named parcels with defined protections, tied directly to the acreage now slated for development. Gunnison Sage-Grouse depend on sagebrush for more than cover. Unlike most grouse, they eat sagebrush leaves right through winter, and hens need large, unbroken stands nearby to raise broods on the insects and forbs that grow among the shrubs. Fragmenting that habitat with roads and buildings, even a modest footprint, can isolate leks, the traditional strutting grounds where males display each spring. Whether the university and wildlife-area parcels functionally replace what's lost at the development site is a question this kind of permit doesn't answer on its own; it establishes the trade, not the outcome for the birds. That answer will come from lek counts in the years after the first roads go in, not from the paperwork.
Keep readingThrough mid-July, the washes around Sabino Canyon, Tanque Verde, and the Rincon Mountain District were nearly silent: iNaturalist records show almost no amphibian sightings across the region. Then, in the three weeks after July 22, more than 200 sightings poured in. The trigger was obvious and precise: the first heavy monsoon rain of the season. This is the Sonoran Desert's starting gun, and it is worth understanding why it works the way it does. , the , the , and the spend most of the year buried underground in a state close to suspended animation, waiting out the heat and drought in a torpor called estivation. It takes a hard, soaking rain after the parched fore-summer to rouse them. Within hours of that first real downpour, they dig their way to the surface, converge on whatever temporary pools have formed, and start calling, all at once, in numbers that can seem to appear from nowhere because, functionally, they just have. The urgency in that chorus is not incidental. Spadefoots run one of the fastest life cycles known among amphibians: egg to fully metamorphosed toadlet in as little as nine days. That speed is an adaptation to the pools themselves, which are shallow, sun-warmed, and often gone within a couple of weeks. A tadpole that dawdles simply bakes. The Sonoran Desert toad works the same race against the calendar, which is notable given its size; it is the largest native toad in the country, and Arizona lists it as a species of concern. What the data shows is a sharp, dated surge in observations rather than a gradual seasonal build, tied tightly to the exact week the rains broke this year. iNaturalist records are presence-only community sightings — they track when and where people spotted animals, not population size or abundance — but the timing here is striking: near-zero sightings before July 22, then hundreds within three weeks. Anyone walking the Rillito corridor or the Rincon foothills after dark in the coming weeks has a real chance of catching it before the pools dry and the desert goes quiet again.
Keep readingThe Zanesville Wastewater Treatment Plant, which discharges directly into the Muskingum River at Zanesville, is currently listed by EPA as in significant non-compliance with its Clean Water Act permit. The specific pollutant and the magnitude of the exceedance aren't part of this cycle's public record, but the setting alone makes the finding worth attention. This reach of the Muskingum, running from the Licking River confluence down through Meigs Creek, is already on Ohio's list of impaired waters requiring a formal cleanup plan. Of 28 stream segments assessed within 15 miles of Zanesville, 25 are impaired. A permitted discharger falling out of compliance on a river system regulators have already flagged as overloaded doesn't just add one more violation to a file; it adds pollutant loading to water that state assessors have said can't absorb more. It's worth ruling out the obvious alternative explanation: this isn't a story about drought concentrating pollutants in a shrunken river. Flow and gauge height at Zanesville are within normal range for the season, and the county has gone fourteen weeks without drought conditions. Whatever is elevating pollutant levels here is a matter of what's being discharged, not how much water is on hand to dilute it. Friends of Lower Muskingum River, a watershed group focused on this exact stretch of river, is a useful point of contact for anyone tracking how this compliance issue is resolved.
Keep readingJefferson County's drought status has shifted with unusual speed this summer. The U.S. Drought Monitor showed zero extreme drought coverage the week of June 30, then 41 percent by mid-July, then 100 percent of the county classified as extreme drought by July 28, a status that has now held for three straight weeks through mid-August. A year ago at this same point in the season, extreme drought coverage was at zero and even moderate drought touched only about a third of the county. That is a steep swing to land in the space of twelve months, and it has arrived in the Foothill Shrublands at exactly the point in the season when plants face peak water demand and wildlife is finishing out breeding season. So far, the downstream signs of stress that would typically follow haven't shown up. Of 20 water bodies assessed within 10 miles in the surrounding watershed, including Bear Creek, Clear Creek, and Turkey Creek, 17 are listed as fully supporting their designated uses, with no impairments on record within 10 miles. That's worth noting precisely because it could change: extreme drought tends to act on a lag, showing up later in the season as falling stream baseflows, warming water, and vegetation stress that doesn't register until conditions have already been severe for weeks. The Jeffco Open Space Foundation is well positioned to track how these protected shrubland parcels hold up through the rest of the year as the drought persists, watching for the delayed effects that a status this extreme, sustained this long, would be expected to eventually produce.
Keep readingSnohomish County has gone from essentially drought-free to fully dry in a single summer. As of late April, no part of the county registered even the lowest tier of the U.S. Drought Monitor's dryness scale. By the first two weeks of August, that lowest category, Abnormally Dry, covered the entire county wall to wall. A smaller slice, about 2.6 percent of the county's land area, tells a sharper story. That pocket first crossed into Moderate Drought in mid-July and has now held at or above that threshold for a full month straight, without tipping further into Severe Drought. This is a sustained trend tracked week over week on a consistent measure, not a one-off reading, which makes the month-long persistence more meaningful than the raw percentage suggests. The dryness lines up with what's been showing up on the ground all season in the Central Puget Lowland: vine maples were already coloring by mid-July, bunchberry fruited three weeks ahead of schedule, and goldenrod bloomed a full six weeks early. None of these phenology shifts can be attributed to drought specifically without more direct evidence, but a hot, moisture-starved summer is exactly the kind of stress that pushes plants toward early senescence and fruiting. No direct streamflow readings were available this cycle to confirm how the drought is affecting local waterways, but sustained dryness like this is worth watching for its potential effects on salmon habitat, the kind of condition Adopt A Stream Foundation tracks in local streams through the season. Separately, this cycle's regulatory water quality checks on discharge permits in the county, including the Everett Ship Repair facility's permit, haven't flagged any new impairments. The drought, not a discharge event, is the story to watch here this summer.
Keep readingAn update, and a correction, on a finding from earlier this summer: on July 14, this feed reported that Vale Wood Farms Dairy in Loretto, PA, had discharged wastewater above its permitted level in early spring. That report described the overage as "nearly double." The underlying record is worse than that. At outfall 001 in the quarter ending March 31, five-day BOD came in 183% over the monthly-average permit limit — close to three times what the permit allows — while total suspended solids ran 55% over. Two very different numbers, and averaging them into one rounded phrase undersold the oxygen-demanding half of the discharge. EPA's compliance database now also carries a formal Significant Non-Compliance designation for the facility, coded as an effluent violation on a monthly average. And the spring quarter is no longer alone: a second set of exceedances at the same outfall, dated August 14, puts BOD 144% over the limit and TSS 92% over. BOD has eased somewhat but is still more than double the permitted level, and suspended solids have gotten worse, not better. This is a documented pattern across two monitoring quarters rather than an inference drawn from the non-compliance flag. The timing works against the stream. Cold spring runoff can hold roughly 12 to 13 milligrams per liter of dissolved oxygen at saturation; by late August, water near 25 °C holds closer to 8. That is a meaningful loss of margin, and it is exactly when organic-rich, oxygen-demanding discharge is landing. What we cannot say is what it has actually done downstream — no in-stream dissolved oxygen reading is available near the outfall, so the ecological consequence remains unmeasured. The regulatory trajectory is the documented part: a spring exceedance, an active non-compliance finding, and a second quarter of exceedances in the low-oxygen heart of summer. A problem that might have resolved on its own instead persisted through the season when it counts most. That pattern is worth watching alongside the work of local groups such as the Clearfield Creek Watershed Association and the Chest Creek Watershed Alliance, both of which monitor water quality in this part of the Central Appalachians' upland dairy country.

Rain falls onto limestone and dolomite bedrock and travels through dissolved channels into springs and streams with almost no natural filtering along the way. That structural vulnerability shows up plainly in the official impairment record for the Southern Limestone/Dolomite Valleys and Low Rolling Hills. Shades Creek and Patton Creek are both listed as impaired under the Clean Water Act with a completed cleanup plan — a TMDL, which sets an enforceable ceiling on how much pollution the waterway can carry. Fivemile Creek is listed as impaired but with other controls expected to address the problem instead of a TMDL. The Little Cahaba River sits in a different spot on that same list. Its Lake Purdy segment (AL03150202-0103-102) is documented as impaired and 303(d)-listed as requiring a TMDL, with no cleanup plan completed. The adjoining upstream segment of the same river is assessed as fully supporting all its designated uses — so the problem is specific to the reservoir end, not the whole stream. That distinction isn't a technicality: until a plan is finalized, there's no binding limit on the pollutant loads reaching that segment and no timeline for improvement. Lake Purdy is also understood to supply drinking water to part of the Birmingham area, which makes the unresolved status at its inlet worth watching rather than filing away. It's tempting to attach a named discharger to that gap, and worth saying plainly that the record doesn't support one. The facility EPA currently lists in significant non-compliance nearest this write-up, FIREROCK PRODUCTS, LLC, sits at 33.4986, -86.9111 — west of Birmingham, in the Village Creek drainage that flows to the Locust Fork and the Black Warrior, a different river basin from the Cahaba. Its violation is also administrative rather than chemical: a required discharge monitoring report was never submitted, with no pollutant exceedance on file. That's a real compliance failure, but nothing in the record connects it to water reaching Lake Purdy, and it shouldn't be read as a source there. What the geology does support is a general caution. Fast-draining bedrock means whatever loads do enter this system reach surface water and springs quickly and with little dilution, so the absence of an enforceable limit matters more in a karst valley than it would where deeper soils and slower runoff buffer the inputs. Identifying what is actually loading the Lake Purdy segment would take the TMDL that hasn't been written yet — which is the point. Until then, the drinking water inlet is the one impaired water here without a ceiling on it, and without a documented cause on the public record either.
Keep readingThe wastewater treatment plant at Battle Road Farm in Lincoln has been out of compliance with its organic pollutant limit for years, and the most recent reading gives no sign of a turnaround. A sample taken August 8, less than a week before this writing, showed the plant's outfall running at 364 percent over its permitted limit for biochemical oxygen demand, the standard measure of how much oxygen bacteria consume while breaking down organic matter in water. This is not an isolated spike. The facility hit 440 percent over limit at the end of 2023, then settled into a grinding pattern of roughly 329 percent over limit every quarter from fall 2024 through this spring. Three years of records now show the same failure recurring instead of resolving. As a general matter, biochemical oxygen demand weighs most on a receiving water in late summer, when warm, slow-moving water already holds less dissolved oxygen than it did in spring. That is a property of the pollutant, though, not a measurement of anything happening below this outfall. No dissolved-oxygen readings are available from the waters downstream of the plant at all: the nearest stations in the surrounding monitoring network report streamflow and gage height only, with no oxygen, temperature, or pH sensors among them. Separately, 25 of 50 assessed water bodies within ten miles of Boston Basin, including Hobbs Brook and the Charles River, are listed as impaired. Those listings are their own records, with their own documented causes. None of them is attributed to this facility, and nothing in the available data connects the two. What stands on the record is the violation itself: a permitted limit exceeded by 364 percent in August, and the same exceedance repeating across three years of quarterly reports. Whether any of it has reached the water downstream is a question the monitoring in place cannot answer, and it would take dissolved-oxygen sampling above and below the outfall to begin to.

Weekly U.S. Drought Monitor reports for Iowa County held at zero percent abnormally dry for three straight weeks in July, the payoff of a wet stretch that finally reset the county after nearly ten months of some degree of dryness or drought stretching back to the previous October. Then, in the first week of August, 83.58 percent of the county jumped into abnormally dry classification, and it has stayed there, essentially unchanged, for three consecutive weekly reports since. Nothing has crossed into moderate drought yet, but the shift itself is the notable part: a full wet reset undone within about a week of the rain stopping. The same week last year the county sat at zero percent, so this year's dry snap has no analog from the prior season at this point in summer. What that classification does not tell us is whether anything on the ground has responded yet. The Drought Monitor is the only signal in the record here. There is no soil-moisture series for the county, no field observations logged since the shift, and a check of nearby USGS gauges returned no discharge readings for the period at all — so the honest position is that we know the classification moved and not much else. It is still worth watching, and it is worth being specific about where. Soil moisture is what governs seed-set in the tallgrass and the water moving through the smaller creeks and seeps that support aquatic insect emergence this time of year, which is why a late-summer swing can matter well before it registers as drought proper. Prairie plants with deep root systems — the kind that anchor this landscape's , , and rosinweeds — are generally understood to buffer short dry spells better than shallow-rooted species, and the wetter microhabitats scattered through the savanna mosaic, seeps, sedge pockets, low swales, would be the first places to check for visible stress if it shows up. Whether any of that is underway right now is an open question, not a finding. The Driftless Area Land Conservancy works this stretch of southwestern Wisconsin, within the broader Driftless Area, and is worth knowing as one of the groups keeping an eye on how these landscapes hold up through swings like this one.
Keep readingThirty-nine research-grade sightings of the were logged across the Kettle Moraines area in the past 30 days. That is the same figure from both available sources — iNaturalist's species roster and the individual observation records — pulled over the same 30-day window and the same 25 km radius. The dates fall in the late-summer stretch when colonies are provisioning new queens before the season ends. Bombus affinis was once common from the upper Midwest into the Northeast, but its range has collapsed by an estimated 90 percent since the late 1990s, and it was listed as federally endangered in 2017, the first bumble bee species in the continental United States to receive that status. A few strongholds remain, and this stretch of southeastern Wisconsin, with its mix of oak savanna, prairie remnant, and undisturbed ground for nesting and overwintering queens, is one of them. Queens of this species need to keep finding nectar and pollen right up until they enter diapause for the winter, so a bee spotted now is doing some of the most consequential foraging of its whole life cycle. She is building fat reserves that have to carry her through months underground, alone, before she can found a colony next spring. But the count itself should not be read as a trend. Eight of the 39 records come from Greenfield Park in West Allis and several more from a single address in Waukesha, so the number tracks where people are out looking at least as much as where bees are. What these records establish is presence and activity across the landscape right now — not that the population is stable, growing, or larger than last year. Separately, and worth noting without overstating its connection to the bees: the ESSENTIAL INDUSTRIES INC facility is currently listed in significant non-compliance with its Clean Water Act permit. The violation on record is administrative — a missed discharge monitoring report — rather than a documented pollutant exceedance, so there's no evidence here of a chemical discharge affecting habitat or water quality. It's a reminder that regulatory oversight in this landscape is uneven, but it shouldn't be read as a threat to the bumble bee population itself. Anyone walking these trails who spots a bumble bee with the telltale rusty patch on its abdomen can help simply by logging it on iNaturalist. Every confirmed record adds to a thin and valuable picture of where this species is still holding ground — and records from less-visited corners of the moraines are the ones that fill the real gaps.
Keep readingStormwater leaving Washington Navy Yard on the Anacostia River is carrying polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons at levels that make the word "exceedance" feel almost too polite. Effluent testing on August 8 found PAH concentrations at one outfall running 59,704% over its permitted limit, and 36,590% over at a second outfall. That is not a one-time lab anomaly. The same two outfalls exceeded limits by 27,043% and 5,808% in March, and by 35,934% back in December. Three consecutive quarters, same facility, same violation, same stretch of river. PAHs form whenever fuel, coal, or other organic material burns incompletely, and once they reach a river they don't simply wash downstream and disappear. They settle into sediment, persist for years, and move up the food chain as bottom-dwelling organisms take them in and larger predators eat those in turn. This particular reach of the Anacostia sits on a federal Superfund site and already carries a legacy of industrial contamination in its sediments; the Navy Yard's own permit also flags PCBs, copper, lead, and zinc as parameters of concern, a fairly complete inventory of twentieth-century industrial runoff. A repeating exceedance of this magnitude, at a federal facility, layered onto decades of contaminated sediment, is exactly the kind of pattern regulators describe as significant noncompliance. Groups like Anacostia Riverkeeper and the Anacostia Watershed Society are active in the watershed, and three straight quarters of outfalls running tens of thousands of percent over limit is exactly the kind of pattern that warrants their attention.
Keep readingOn August 8, Milford's wastewater treatment plant, which discharges to the Souhegan River, reported a phosphorus violation of 652 percent over its permitted limit, alongside a repeat copper exceedance the same day. The copper problem is not new; it echoes a violation from late March that was already the facility's second consecutive one. What makes the phosphorus number especially striking is how young that limit is: it comes from a general permit that only took effect this past February, so a blowout of this size arrived within the permit's first six months. EPA currently lists the plant as one of only three facilities in significant non-compliance across this watershed. The timing sharpens the concern. This stretch of the Souhegan is already on the state's impaired-waters list for nutrients, and a pollution reduction plan for phosphorus loading here exists precisely because this has been a recognized problem before. The violation also landed as Hillsborough County was climbing out of a severe drought, with over 80 percent of the county still in moderate-or-worse drought conditions in late July, easing to roughly a fifth of that by mid-August. Low summer flows matter here because they mean less river volume to dilute whatever the plant releases. Excess phosphorus in slow, warm water is exactly the kind of load that feeds algal growth and can drive down dissolved oxygen for the fish and mussels downstream. Flow and oxygen readings at the outfall itself were not available, but the conditions on the river this summer were set up for exactly that kind of stress.
