A Baird's Sandpiper lingers as Wrightsville's pool drops

A shorebird that usually crosses the continent a thousand miles west of here has been feeding at Wrightsville Reservoir in East Montpelier for more than a week. (Calidris bairdii) showed up in six separate reports between August 21 and the end of the month, never more than two birds at a time.It is one of the small brown sandpipers birders lump together as "peeps," and the way to pick it out is structural rather than a matter of color. Its wingtips extend noticeably past the tip of the tail, giving the bird a long, tapered, attenuated look that the other peeps don't have, and a brownish buff wash spreads across the chest where most peeps are gray and white. On a flat it also gives itself away by where it stands: while the others probe at the waterline, Baird's works the drier margins above the water.That habit is tied to the kind of trip it is on. Baird's Sandpiper breeds in the high Arctic and winters in South America, and instead of running down the coast it migrates through the continental interior, funneling in bulk through the Great Plains. Inland Vermont sits off to the side of that corridor, an uncommon stopover rather than part of the route. Birds that do stop here are refueling on invertebrates in exposed sediment, and reports spread over more than a week suggest birds staging to feed rather than one flyover seen twice.Wrightsville is a flood-control detention basin rather than a water-supply reservoir, built to sit low through the dry season and fill only when runoff spikes. Inflow has fallen off sharply: the gauge on the North Branch of the Winooski at Wrightsville has dropped from about 62 cubic feet per second within the past month to 8 as of today, with gage height down roughly a foot and three quarters over the same stretch. Washington County went from no abnormally dry area at all in late July to 70 percent abnormally dry for the week of August 25 to 31. In a basin shaped like this one, falling pool stage would be expected to bring the shallow upstream margins up out of the water as bare sediment, the kind of surface a Baird's Sandpiper is built to walk — though confirming that link at this specific site would take a closer look at the reservoir's bathymetry rather than the gauge record alone.

The Marshfield wastewater treatment facility, which discharges into the Winooski River, is currently listed by EPA as in significant non-compliance with its Clean Water Act permit. That status lines up directly with the river's own record: this stretch, designated segment VT08-07.02, is one of only two segments in the wider watershed assessment that EPA has formally listed as impaired and requiring a cleanup plan. A facility out of compliance sitting on a river already flagged as failing water quality standards is about as clean a regulatory match as this record gets.What's notable is what hasn't happened next. Across the broader sweep of permitted dischargers in the area, three facilities are currently in significant non-compliance and four have active violations, yet zero dollars in penalties have been assessed. Enforcement, in other words, has flagged the problem but hasn't yet put any weight behind it.Specific effluent readings weren't available this session, so this isn't a claim about what's actually in the water right now, just what the regulatory record shows: a named discharger, an impaired river, and so far no penalty attached to either.
White bog orchid peaks in bloom across glacial fens

(Platanthera dilatata leucostachyus) is in peak bloom this week in the calcareous fens near East Calais, with three observations recorded between July 4–8. This threatened orchid flowers in a narrow 2–3 week window each summer, and finding it in full bloom is a sign that something essential underground remains intact.These orchids grow only where cold groundwater seeps year-round through calcium-rich glacial till, keeping root zones chilled through the warmest months. Any disruption of that cold-water plumbing—warming, drainage, or altered flow—and the plants vanish. Calcareous fens themselves are relicts of the glacial landscape, now covering less than a fraction of a percent of Vermont's wetland area. Two centuries of agricultural and residential drainage have reduced and fragmented what little remains. For now, the geologic infrastructure that sustains these orchids—the post-glacial heritage buried beneath the fen—is still working. But it is fragile, and it will not recover if lost.
