Five aquarium castoffs surface in the same Bengaluru pocket

Five casual sightings logged between August 5 and August 12, clustered tightly around Chinnapa Garden and Jayamahal, point to something worth watching in the waterways feeding into Bengaluru's dry deciduous forest belt.¹ One Alligator Gar, one Chinese High-fin Banded Shark, one Chinese Mahseer, and one each of Convict Cichlid and Peacock Cichlid turned up within a few hundred meters of each other.¹ None of these fish are native to South Deccan streams or tanks, and all five are staples of the home aquarium trade.¹ One individual of each species, clustered in a single residential pocket, reads far more like a series of tank dumps than any natural range extension.

The gar is the one that matters most here. It's a large ambush predator native to the slow-moving rivers and bayous of the southern United States and Mexico, capable of growing well past a meter and easily outliving the tanks it's typically bought for. When a fish like this outgrows its aquarium, or its upkeep gets too expensive, the easiest option for an owner is often release rather than disposal. Dropped into a new watershed with no natural checks on it, a predator of that size can reshape a pond's fish community within a few seasons.

Bengaluru's lakes and seasonal channels are more interconnected than they look from the street, and a release into one residential tank could, in time, work its way toward water bodies closer to the South Deccan Plateau dry deciduous forests reserve itself. There's no water-quality or protected-land monitoring data yet to confirm whether any of these five have moved beyond where they were first seen. Still, a released Alligator Gar loose in an urban tank network is not something to shrug off, and it's worth keeping an eye on whether any of these species start showing up in lakes or streams nearer the reserve.
