This matters acutely because (Rhinoclemmys areolata) nest along these same edges this season, and saltwater intrusion into their nesting habitat is a direct threat to eggs and hatchlings. As hurricane season opens, the water is already sending a signal. These pulses are becoming more frequent and more severe. For now, turtles nest where they have nested for generations — but the margin between freshwater wetland and salt is narrower than it once was.
