The coast is already rising. Monsoon winds are pushing water inland days before the rains arrive — the tide stands nearly 10 centimeters above its predicted level, flooding the intertidal zone longer than the spawning rhythms of fish have tuned to expect. Local fisherfolk recognize the signal at once: it is time to pause, to let the sea move through its own cycles undisturbed. Over the past two months, more than 200 observations across 121 taxa have been logged from this coastal reach. Eucalyptus dominates the tallied records, a reflection of the introduced plantings that now make up nearly a quarter of the observable flora here. Among them are native species — trees, birds, insects, and herbs bound to the region's ecological history — but the landscape they inhabit is increasingly composed of species brought from elsewhere. The rhythm of the tides waits for no arbor; the question is whether the creatures that depend on that rhythm can adapt quickly enough.

The fish and invertebrate communities that evolved in moving water have had to adapt to a system that, by design, creates dead zones.

Bold jumping spiders hunt at summer peak

The days near Paonia right now are as long as they get. Heat builds off the sagebrush flats by mid-morning, insects are everywhere, and if you look closely at a fence post, a rock face, or the broad leaf of a cottonwood, you may find a bold jumping spider looking back at you. Bold jumping spiders are compact, heavy-bodied hunters, black with white and sometimes iridescent green markings, and rarely longer than a thumbnail. What sets them apart is their eyes. The front-facing pair is enormous relative to their body, and the visual acuity those eyes provide is exceptional among spiders. They can resolve detail and judge distance with enough precision to stalk and pounce on prey from several body lengths away. Unlike web-building spiders, which wait for prey to come to them, bold jumping spiders actively move through their environment: pausing, pivoting, tracking. When a fly lands within range, the spider turns to face it directly, fixes it with those forward eyes, and creeps closer before launching. The jump is controlled and short, and the spider drags a silk safety line as it goes, so a miss does not mean a fall. This is peak season for them. Long days mean more insect activity across more hours, and the spiders track that activity. Around Paonia, they hunt across the sagebrush scrub and the drier rocky margins where insects concentrate on warm surfaces. Ten-lined June beetles are out now, large enough that a bold jumping spider would not attempt one, but the smaller flies, beetles, and moths that share this landscape are fair targets. The cottonwood stag beetle is similarly too large, but its presence signals the kind of decaying wood habitat that also shelters the small insects the spiders do take. Where the invasive broad-leaved sweet pea and purple crownvetch have established themselves along roadsides and disturbed margins, they draw in pollinators, and the spiders hunt at the edges of those patches too, taking whatever arrives. The spiders are not specialists. They take what they can catch. Breeding activity is running alongside all of this hunting. Male bold jumping spiders court females with a precise visual display: the male faces the female, raises and waves his front legs in a specific pattern, and moves side to side. The female watches. Her response determines whether courtship continues or ends abruptly. Vision is the medium of the whole interaction, which makes sense given how much of their lives depend on seeing accurately. Females lay eggs in a silk retreat, often tucked under bark or behind a loose stone, and guard them until they hatch. The young spiders that emerge this summer will spend the rest of the season hunting and growing, overwintering as subadults, and reaching maturity the following year. Other hunters share this landscape. Ash-throated flycatchers take insects on the wing from exposed perches. Western terrestrial garter snakes work the wetter margins. Blue-gray gnatcatchers pick small arthropods from leaf surfaces in much the same zones where jumping spiders patrol. The spiders are prey as well as predators. Birds take them when they can, and the spiders' habit of moving in open sight on sun-warmed surfaces makes them visible. Their response to a large moving shape is immediate: they turn to face it, drop to a lower surface, or hold still. That direct gaze, those big eyes tracking you, is the spider assessing whether to flee. If you are near any sun-exposed surface right now, a wooden railing, a stone wall, the rough bark of a cottonwood, take a slow look. The spider will likely see you before you see it, and it will already be watching.

Wild bergamot seeds and the goldfinch's summer feast

Along the open edges and disturbed meadows near Westminster, the wild bergamot is finishing its bloom cycle. Some plants still carry a fringe of pale lavender flowers, but most heads have gone to seed — the tight, bristled clusters drying in place on stiff upright stems. This is the window that matters for American goldfinches, and right now they are using it. Wild bergamot is a native mint-family plant, and it grows in dense stands where the soil is dry and the sun is full. It flowers through mid-summer, attracting golden northern bumble bees, two-tailed swallowtails, and a steady rotation of other pollinators. But once pollination is done, the plant shifts its investment. Each spent flower head develops into a cluster of small, dry nutlets packed tightly inside the dried calyx. To a goldfinch, that structure is a seed cache. The bird lands directly on the stem, grips the head with its feet, and works the seeds out with its bill, one by one. If you are near a bergamot stand right now, watch for the stems swaying without wind. That motion is almost always a goldfinch. American goldfinches are one of the latest-nesting songbirds in North America. Most songbirds time their breeding to coincide with the peak of insect abundance in late spring. Goldfinches do something different: they wait for thistles, bergamot, and other composite and mint-family plants to set seed before they begin nesting. The female lines her nest almost exclusively with plant down, often from thistle and milkweed, and the nestlings are fed a diet of regurgitated seeds rather than insects. That dependency on seed maturity pushes their nesting peak into the heart of summer, which is exactly where we are now. The showy milkweed nearby is already producing pods, and the goldfinches will use that too, both for nest material and eventually for food. The plant community here is giving them everything they need at the same time. Male goldfinches are in their brightest plumage through the breeding season: a sharp, saturated yellow with black wings and a black cap. That color comes from carotenoid pigments the birds cannot produce themselves. They get it from the seeds and plant matter they eat, particularly the yellow-pigmented compounds in certain flowers and seed oils. A male that has fed well on a diverse seed diet through the spring carries more pigment into his feathers during the summer molt. The brightness you see on a goldfinch working a bergamot head is, in a direct way, a record of what that bird has been eating for the past several months. The bergamot stands here also carry other visitors worth noting. The golden northern bumble bee, which is a threatened species in this region, works the remaining open flowers with a focused persistence. The plains bee assassin, a native ambush predator, sometimes waits motionless on flower heads for exactly that kind of visitor. Both species are present in this area, and both are tied to the bergamot in different ways: one as a pollinator, one as a predator of pollinators. The goldfinch, arriving weeks later for the seeds, is using a resource the plant produced partly because those earlier visitors did their work. The bergamot stems stand about waist high in full sun. If you are near a patch of them, look at the dried heads. Many will show small gaps where seeds have already been taken. Some stems will still be moving. The goldfinch's call is a bright, ascending note, often given in flight — four or five syllables that rise and then fall. In the heat of a peak summer afternoon, with the milkweed blooming and the bergamot going to seed, that call is one of the more reliable sounds in this landscape.
