This is a large, slow-living silkmoth whose caterpillars depend on healthy pines and spruces; their presence in the foothills is a quiet indicator of suitable conifer forest. The foothills also logged four observations from early to mid-July—two at 126 Rice Farm Dr, Jeffersonville and two at separate Vermont locations—a data point worth noting as the species remains a concern across conifer forests in the region. The two moths occupy opposite ecological roles: budworm caterpillars are voracious defoliators that strip needle cover in weeks, while Imperial Moth adults don't feed at all and their caterpillars cycle slowly through conifer stands across years. But their appearance across the same corner of the foothills in the same July window matters. Conifer stands under sustained budworm pressure lose needle density fast, and that stress weakens the very pines and spruces that Imperial Moth caterpillars need to survive and mature.

Eucalyptus was planted by the millions across Los Angeles over the past century and a half, lining streets, filling parks, and covering hillsides from the coast to the foothills — creating a continuous, connected food source across an enormous urban canopy. A beetle that specializes on eucalyptus has essentially inherited an ideal landscape. Whether this establishes into something that those trees here will struggle with, or stays below the threshold of serious damage, remains an open question — one worth watching as summer peak activity continues.

Three threatened skates in a single year off Arrábida

(Raja clavata), (Rostroraja alba), and (Raja brachyura) have all been recorded off this coast within the past year — in late January, late April, and just three days ago. All three are threatened species, and their appearance in these inshore waters is noteworthy. Skates were once abundant throughout the northeast Atlantic before bottom trawling depleted them; seeing them return to familiar ground is a quiet signal worth marking. Skates are slow-breeding, long-lived fish that reach reproductive maturity late — a Blonde Skate may not breed until it is over a decade old, meaning recovery from overfishing is measured in generations, not seasons. Whether three observations in a year reflect genuine population recovery or simply reflect more people with cameras in the water is hard to say. But Thornback, Owl, and Blonde Skate all appearing off Arrábida in a single calendar year is not a record to overlook.

Recent water pollution threatens health of nearby mammals

Two permitted dischargers on the East Fork Whitewater River are both in significant non-compliance with their Clean Water Act permits — and the wildlife drinking from that water downstream has no way of knowing it. RICHMOND WWTP, CITY OF and BELDEN WIRE & CABLE COMPANY have no penalties assessed yet. Meanwhile, iNaturalist observations from the downstream watershed over the past year show a steady parade of native mammals that routinely drink from or forage along riverbanks. White-tailed Deer, Common Raccoon, Virginia Opossum, Groundhog, Eastern Cottontail, and Striped Skunk have all been recorded within the corridor in recent months — the most recent as recently as July 19. Also observed in February: an Eastern Red Bat, a threatened species that drinks on the wing, skimming the water's surface during low passes over the river. Late July into August is peak thermal stress season for warm-water streams. Flow drops, temperatures climb, and whatever enters the river from those two discharge points becomes more concentrated. The mammals observed here don't stop drinking because a permit is out of compliance. That's the gap this data can't close on its own.

Monarchs lay their eggs exclusively on milkweed, and their caterpillars eat nothing else. Bumble bees work the flowers for nectar and are among milkweed's most effective pollinators. The two sightings falling in the same week is a reminder that July is when both species are typically active and ranging widely. Three sightings on their own is just three sightings — neither observation signals alarm or remarkable success — but the fact that the corridor is supporting both species at the same moment speaks to the quality of the weedy edge habitat that threads through it.

The insect feeds by piercing bark and drawing sap from dozens of host plants — grapes, hops, apples, black walnut — but it shows a strong preference for Tree-of-Heaven, the invasive Asian tree that has spread along the valley's roadsides and riverbanks and now serves as the species' primary staging habitat. The timing is notable. Hampden County has been under moderate drought (D1) for at least three consecutive weeks, stressing the same trees the lanternflies are already targeting — and trees under prolonged water stress tend to have fewer resources to cope with additional pressure. Anyone finding egg masses — flat, mud-colored smears on bark, stones, or outdoor furniture — should scrape them off and report them. At this scale, early removal is still the most effective intervention.

The beetles' presence at the dogbane margins is not a health clearance for the water, but it does say the plant is present and holding on, which suggests the ground beneath it retains some ecological resilience even as the water flows thin and stressed.

Monarchs recorded across the basin in July breeding season

(Danaus plexippus) have been turning up across the basin nearly every day this month — from the beach towns along the coast through Culver City, Pasadena, and up into the San Gabriel foothills, with two sightings at Ballona Wetlands on a single day last week. July is the summer breeding generation, not the fall migration; these are butterflies searching out milkweed to complete one more reproductive cycle before the autumn push south toward Mexican overwintering sites. The western population crashed by roughly 99% by 2020, according to Xerces Society Thanksgiving Count data — a collapse driven by loss of milkweed across the landscape and pesticide use. Urban and suburban milkweed plantings across exactly this kind of fragmented, built-up terrain are considered a key factor in the species' prospects — a reminder that backyard conservation can matter at a continental scale. Yet not all milkweed is equal here. The tropical milkweed that lines many garden beds stays green year-round in the mild climate, which can cause monarchs to skip migration entirely and linger on plants that accumulate a protozoan parasite called Ophryocystis elektroscirrha. The sightings at Ballona are a reminder that even a heavily impaired urban estuary still draws this species — though what observation counts reflect about population status, observer effort, or habitat use is beyond what presence records alone can tell us.

Eight dragonfly species in two days at Corolla freshwater ponds

Eight dragonfly and damselfly species turned up in two days this week around the freshwater ponds behind the Corolla dunes—a compressed burst of odonate diversity that marks the midsummer peak when shallow barrier island wetlands run most productive. The run included (Libellula axilena), a threatened species found at Lost Lake Lane on July 23rd, alongside , , , , , , and . Bar-winged Skimmers are coastal plain specialists that breed in still, well-vegetated ponds and are among the first odonates to vanish when those wetlands shrink or go brackish—their presence is a key indicator of adequate freshwater depth and stable vegetation cover. The Currituck Sound gauge at Corolla is reading 1.08 feet, well within the normal range, meaning the freshwater lens behind the dunes remains intact and hasn't been pushed back by high water on the sound side. That constellation of eight species, each with different microhabitat preferences, suggests the ponds are holding their productive character through the summer heat.
