A Japanese medaka—the ricefish of children's songs and garden ponds—was spotted this past week in one of Tokyo's urban waterways, a small but significant sighting in the midsummer heat. The species was once common enough in slow streams and rice paddies that it entered the vernacular and the nursery rhyme; a 1994 Space Shuttle mission that sent ricefish to breed in orbit drew on a species everyone in Japan knew from childhood memory. Their near-disappearance from wild Tokyo happened gradually—concrete channelization, agrochemical runoff, and competition from introduced species like largemouth bass and mosquitofish erased them from most of their historical range—until the fish were simply gone, noticed only in retrospect. Midsummer is the most stressful period for ricefish in urban water bodies: dissolved oxygen falls as temperatures rise, and shallow channels that lack vegetation offer little refuge. Finding any confirmed presence here means at least one pocket of habitat is holding conditions the species can tolerate. That a ricefish can survive at all in midsummer Tokyo speaks both to the resilience of the species and to the rarity of remaining suitable refuge in the urban waterscape.
