Suspended solids are a quieter kind of pollution than a chemical spill, but in limestone spring streams they are deeply damaging: fine sediment settles into the gravel beds where mayfly larvae shelter and where trout spawn, smothering both. The Conodoguinet was historically one of central Pennsylvania's finest limestone trout streams, its cool calcium-rich water fed by springs bubbling up through the underlying karst — a system that buffered drought and temperature extremes in ways that made it unusually productive. are still being recorded in these waters this summer, a sign the gravel-bottom habitat hasn't entirely given way. Yet persistent sediment loading is exactly the kind of pressure that erodes these communities slowly, without a visible threshold moment — until the damage is already done.
