Headwater stations starting water year well below normal

October 15, 2026

Water-year precipitation to date across three headwater SNOTEL stations ranges from 8 to 43 percent of normal through October 14, 2026. This lean beginning follows September's drought relief and signals a potentially constrained runoff season ahead, especially if the deficit persists through winter.

Many Glacier precipitation running below normal

October 15, 2026

Water-year precipitation at Many Glacier SNOTEL station 79 km away is 0.6 inches as of October 14, 2026, compared to a median of 1.4 inches for this date, tracking at 43% of normal. With snow accumulation at this lower headwater elevation normally beginning in early November, the persistent deficit suggests reduced water supply entering the 2026-2027 water year.

Grave Creek station posts driest start of the three

October 15, 2026

Water-year precipitation at Grave Creek SNOTEL station 87 km away is 0.1 inches as of October 14, 2026, or just 8% of the 1.2-inch median for this date. This is the driest early water-year start among the three nearest headwater stations, indicating exceptionally light precipitation across the higher-elevation drainage feeding this ecosystem.

Silver-haired bats face wind turbine risk during migration

October 4, 2026

s were observed on 2026-09-30 and 2026-09-20 in Calgary and surrounding area. The species is now federally designated as Endangered, facing high mortality from wind turbines during fall migration as they pass through the ecosystem. Current migratory patterns expose this declining population to ongoing wind energy infrastructure threats across North America.
