Pima County's drought picture has changed dramatically at one end of the scale and barely at all at the other. This same week last summer, the entire county sat in severe drought or worse, with nearly forty percent of it classified as extreme. Since early December, that extreme category has held at zero, week after week, for almost eight months straight, a real and durable retreat at the top of the drought ladder.But severe drought itself hasn't followed the same trajectory. That broader category has been stuck flat at just over forty percent of the county for eight consecutive weeks now, even as the extreme tier stayed clear. It amounts to recovery at the ceiling without recovery in the middle, and it's a useful corrective to how a single dramatic event can read on the ground.Desert vegetation and groundwater don't work on a single-storm timescale, though. Saguaro, palo verde, and the region's aquifers track the cumulative, multi-year drought classification, not any one pulse of monsoon rain, however impressive in the moment. This is a classification comparison rather than a direct streamflow or groundwater reading, and it says the region has pulled back from the worst extreme without yet climbing out of the broader dry pattern underneath it, a distinction worth keeping in mind across this landscape's basins and uplands as the monsoon continues to unfold this season.

It knows exactly where the squirrel is, how fast it moves, and when it pauses to forage.The ground squirrel emerges from its burrow as temperatures drop below ninety degrees. It has spent the brutal afternoon hours underground, its body temperature lowered through behavioral thermoregulation. Now it searches for seeds scattered by yesterday's wind, moving in quick dashes between the safety of creosote bushes. The squirrel's survival depends on speed and vigilance, but the rattlesnake's depends on patience and precision. The snake can strike faster than the eye can follow, injecting venom that immobilizes prey within minutes. A zebra-tailed lizard skitters past, its black and white striped tail flashing as it runs. The snake ignores it. Lizards cool too quickly in the evening air to register strongly on thermal sensors. The snake waits for mammals.This hunting relationship has shaped both predator and prey. Ground squirrels have evolved keen hearing to detect the subtle sound of scales moving across sand. They leap vertically when startled, a behavior that can carry them over a striking snake. The rattlesnake's heat pits can detect temperature differences as small as three-hundredths of a degree Celsius. Saguaro fruit splits open for desert birds

Above them, thirty feet up the arms of the saguaro cacti, ruby-red fruits have begun to split open along their seams. The thick desert light catches the exposed crimson flesh, bright against the waxy green columns of the cacti.Each saguaro fruit contains thousands of tiny black seeds suspended in sweet, sticky pulp. When the fruit ripens in late May, it cracks open like a four-petaled flower, revealing its contents to the desert. The timing is precise. The cacti flower in April and early May, when the desert is still cool enough for pollinators to work efficiently. Six weeks later, as the heat builds toward summer, the fruits ripen all at once across the Sonoran Desert.Mourning doves and white-winged doves have been waiting for this moment. They arrive at the saguaros in small flocks, perching carefully on the cactus arms or hovering briefly to snatch fruit from the tips. The doves swallow the seeds whole along with the pulp. Their digestive systems extract the sugars and moisture but leave the seeds intact. When the birds fly to distant perches or water sources, they deposit the seeds in their droppings, often miles from the parent cactus. Gambel's quail work the ground below, pecking at fallen fruit and carrying seeds in their crops to new territories. This partnership between cactus and bird has shaped the distribution of saguaros across southern Arizona for thousands of years. Without the birds, the massive cacti would reproduce only in the immediate vicinity of their parents, creating dense groves that would eventually compete themselves out of existence. The birds scatter the seeds across the desert floor, giving each new saguaro space to establish its own territory.The fruit season lasts only a few weeks. By mid-June, the remaining fruits will have dried or been consumed, and the saguaros will begin their long wait until next spring's flowering. The birds will disperse across the desert, carrying their cargo of seeds to arroyos, rocky slopes, and the protective shade of nurse plants where young saguaros can take root. Some seeds will germinate with the summer rains. Most will wait in the soil for years, ready for the right combination of moisture and temperature.Listen for the flutter of wings against the morning stillness.
