Piedmont Uplands
June field report
Early summer flowering is accelerating across the ecosystem as swamp milkweed and coneflower buds swell alongside open buttonbush blooms. Simultaneously, the first fruits are ripening and seeds dispersing from earlier bloomers like foxglove beardtongue and New Jersey tea, while some shrubs shift toward autumn colors despite lingering green growth elsewhere.

Buttonbush is in peak bloom from Alexandria to Great Falls — a brief nectar window for bumblebees and sphinx moths. Nineteen of 26 nearby water bodies are officially impaired, yet this native shrub persists in floodplain soils. Not a clean bill of health, but the riparian fringe still holds.
