Open Space STL, founded in 1965, calls itself the St. Louis region's first activist environmental and conservation group, working to conserve, restore and sustain land, water and other natural resources. It runs Operation Clean Stream on the Meramec River, habitat management and outdoor recreation through Operation Wild Lands, watershed Trash Bashes, and a land trust that protects property through conservation easements. Its work spans the St. Louis region, including the Meramec River, River des Peres, and the Missouri and Mississippi river watersheds.
