Ocean City Reef Foundation

The Ocean City Reef Foundation builds and maintains artificial reefs off the Atlantic coast of Maryland, working to restore seafloor habitat diminished by industrial harvesting and natural degradation. It deploys reef substrates including decommissioned vessels, concrete units, and scrap metal, then monitors the mussel, coral, and other growth that colonizes them and shelters fish, crabs, shrimp, and lobsters. The sponsorship-driven nonprofit was formed to support reef development after the state reef program ended, and it ties its habitat work to recreational fishing and diving, public education, and natural resource conservation.
