Maine Island Trail Association

The Maine Island Trail Association is a membership organization dedicated to the enjoyment and stewardship of Maine's wild islands. It manages the Maine Island Trail, a water trail of roughly 240 island and mainland sites stretching from Kittery to West Quoddy Head, maintained through handshake agreements with more than 100 private and public landowners who allow public access. MITA supports the trail with guidebooks and a mobile app, volunteer island cleanups and stewardship programs, and education on low-impact boating and Leave No Trace practices. Founded in 1988, it is based in Portland.
