Maine Chapter Of The American Chestnut Foundation

The Maine Chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation was established in 1999 to restore the American chestnut at the northernmost end of the tree's natural range. Maine is home to more mature, flowering wild American chestnuts than any other state, a result of geographic isolation from the denser southern populations where the blight fungus spreads more readily. The chapter harvests nuts from wild Maine trees to conserve cold-adapted genes, sells seed to the public, and runs Chestnuts Across Maine, a program that establishes public plantings with land trusts, state parks, schools, and town squares.
