Lower Phalen Creek Project

Founded in 1997 as the Lower Phalen Creek Project and now operating as Wakan Tipi Awanyankapi, this is a Dakota-led, Native-run nonprofit on Saint Paul's East Side whose stated mission is engaging people to honor and care for our natural places and the sacred sites and cultural value within them. Its work spans sites from Lake Phalen to the Mississippi River, including Wakan Tipi, Wicahapi, Swede Hollow Park, and Pig's Eye Regional Park. Current projects include operating the Wakan Tipi Center and the Daylighting Phalen Creek initiative, alongside volunteer programs, exhibits, and community events.
