Lake Merritt Institute

The Lake Merritt Institute is a community-based nonprofit that has served as steward of Lake Merritt in Oakland, California since 1992, working alongside volunteers, schools and the City of Oakland. Its Clean Lake Program runs cleanups multiple times a week and removed roughly 111,630 gallons of trash from the lake's waters and shorelines in 2025. The Institute also gives educational presentations on the lake's natural history, wildlife and urban pollution, and installed and maintains aeration fountains that add oxygen to the water.
