IPCI USA is the United States arm of the International Pernambuco Conservation Initiative, a not-for-profit dedicated to the conservation and sustainable use of Caesalpinia echinata, Brazil's national tree, known as pau brasil or pernambuco. Its stated mission is to promote science-based conservation, replanting, and sustainable use of the species, whose wood is used to make bows for stringed instruments. Roughly a third of its members are bow makers, and it pledges a self-imposed moratorium on new pernambuco purchases until forest inventories and conservation plans are in place.
