SIL, the International Society of Limnology, was founded in 1922 and describes itself as the oldest and only international society devoted entirely to inland waters. It has roughly 1,250 members across 70 countries and connects researchers working on the physics, chemistry, biology, geology, and management of lakes, rivers, and other inland waters. It publishes the peer-reviewed journal Inland Waters and the twice-yearly SILnews, runs working groups on topics such as aquatic invasive species, lake restoration, plankton ecology, and dryland limnology, and holds international congresses.
