Indigenous Conservation Council

The Indigenous Conservation Council of the Chesapeake Bay is an inter-tribal council whose mission is to build the capacity of tribal nations to rematriate and care for their lands in ways that reinforce sovereignty and self-determination. Formed in 2022 by the leadership of Virginia's seven federally recognized tribes and granted 501(c)(3) status in April 2024, it provides capacity building, shared resources, and support for tribal environmental programs across the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Its stated conviction is that returning land to Indigenous peoples who practice tribal values is one of the best ways to restore and heal landscapes and communities.
