Independence Land Conservancy

Founded in 1972 and now operating as Blue Heron Headwaters Conservancy, this land trust protects the land, water, and wildlife in the headwaters region of the Clinton, Shiawassee, Huron, and Flint rivers in southeastern Michigan. It holds interests in about 60 properties totaling roughly 1,600 acres, some owned outright and the rest under conservation easement, and follows stream corridors across county lines from its original northwest Oakland County focus. It inspects its protected properties, opens several preserves to the public with nature trails, and runs education and river protection work.
