Housatonic River Initiative Inc

The Housatonic River Initiative is a Berkshire County coalition formed in 1992 to press for a comprehensive cleanup of PCB contamination in the Housatonic River. It intervenes in the EPA process around General Electric's remediation, filing briefs and appeals and participating in settlement negotiations, and it argues for treatment technologies such as thermal desorption instead of disposing of contaminated sediment in local landfills. HRI also runs public education on the river's contamination and health effects across western Massachusetts and downstream Connecticut, working toward what it calls a fishable, swimmable river.
