The Grasmere and Cameron Lakes Bluebelt Conservancy is a 501(c)(3) founded in 2011 by Staten Island residents to "protect the natural ecosystem, maintain the water and to educate the public about Brady's Pond." It describes Brady's Pond as a naturally protected wetland and the only naturally swimmable pond on Staten Island, sustaining a freshwater ecosystem and habitat for indigenous plants and animals. The pond also serves as a storm basin, taking runoff from roughly 33 acres of highway, streets and park and shielding nearby homes from flooding.
