Friends of the Shenandoah River is a volunteer, nonprofit scientific organization working to protect and restore the aquatic environment of the Shenandoah River and its tributaries. Volunteer citizen monitors collect samples across the Shenandoah watershed, which are analyzed in the group's own laboratory in Winchester, Virginia, and problems are reported to the appropriate authorities. It runs a summer E. coli testing program and a public Know Before You Go alert system covering harmful algal blooms and other water quality conditions.
