Friends of the Pecos River is a 501(c)(3) formed in 2021 to restore and preserve the stretch of the Pecos River in Texas from Imperial to Sheffield, a segment it calls the forgotten reach. The group cites withheld releases from Red Bluff Reservoir, proximity to the oil patch, groundwater depletion and persistent drought as the pressures on that river. Its work includes riparian and rangeland restoration with landowners, scientific monitoring, youth education through local schools, and connecting stakeholders and institutions around the river.
