Friends of the 500th is a nonprofit founded in 1996 that supports Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge, the 500th refuge in the national system, in Tucker County, West Virginia. It works with the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the local community on wildlife and biological management objectives alongside recreational and educational goals. Its programs include the Wild School wetlands curriculum for sixth graders, bird walks, a volunteer-maintained native garden, a Master Naturalist course, and a volunteer-staffed bookstore in the refuge visitor center.
