Choptank Riverkeeper

The Choptank Riverkeeper is the ShoreRivers program defending the Choptank River, which runs roughly 68 miles through a nearly 1,000 square mile watershed on Maryland's Eastern Shore, together with tributaries including the Tuckahoe River, Harris Creek, Broad Creek, and the Tred Avon River. The riverkeeper and volunteer networks monitor water quality at nearly 50 locations across the tidal river to track the nutrient and sediment pollution degrading it. In the row crop farmland of the Upper Choptank the program works with farmers and landowners to manage nutrients and sediment before they reach the water, while in the Lower Choptank it focuses on runoff and wastewater systems in waterfront towns and on habitat work such as building oyster reefs and planting underwater grasses.
